Epic Games Store July 16 Freebies: Luto and Echo Generation Midnight Edition

The Epic Games Store has announced its next batch of free titles for July 16: Luto and Echo Generation: Midnight Edition. Together they’re listed at roughly $45 in value, and the games will remain claimable on the storefront until July 23.

Echo Generation comes from the small Canadian indie studio Cococucumber, and it’s built as a turn-based RPG starring a group of kids who dig into a summer mystery unfolding in a small town. Rather than focusing purely on combat, the game leans heavily on exploration and clue-chasing, with quest progression, party management, and active turn-based fights that draw comparisons to both Final Fantasy and Paper Mario. Players will spend time speaking with locals, tracking down information, opening up new routes, and recruiting pet companions, while also picking up comic books that function as combat upgrades. As the story advances, the enemies become stranger and stranger, pushing the tone further into surreal territory. Even though the setting is the 1990s instead of the ’80s, the overall vibe of Echo Generation strongly channels the kind of small-town, supernatural mystery energy fans associate with Stranger Things.

Luto and Echo Generation: Midnight Edition Debut as Epic’s Freebies Next Week

Echo Generation is one of Epic’s July 16 giveaways, paired with Luto. For this promotion, the storefront will be handing out the so-called “Midnight Edition” of the game. The enhanced release launched in June 2024, and it brings a suite of updates including fast travel, a quest journal, revised combat balancing, additional status effects, and camera tilt and zoom controls. The update also improves the visuals, expands controller support, and adds 12 more languages, among other changes. On OpenCritic, the title shows a “Strong” rating, landing at an average score of 77 across 33 reviews, which mostly frame it as an excellent RPG built around active time battles.

The second freebie on July 16 is Luto, a first-person psychological horror developed by the Spanish indie studio Broken Bird Games. It released in July 2025 and follows a character who finds themselves trapped inside their own home, where the familiar space starts warping into a shifting maze shaped by grief, anxiety, and reality-bending distortions. Instead of centering on fighting, the gameplay focuses on exploring, solving environmental puzzles, gathering clues, and interpreting the story as it unfolds. Mechanically, the experience is built around looping corridors, locked rooms, spatial misdirection, audio cues, and surreal set pieces meant to unnerve players and keep them unsettled. In that sense, Luto has been described as blending the feel of P.T. with Amnesia.
