Elden Ring Guide: Farm Smithing Stones 1 & 2 Fast in Limgrave and Liurnia
If you’re trying to upgrade gear in Elden Ring—especially in the early stretch up to upgrade level 6—Smithing Stones 1 and 2 are the bottleneck. The catch is that you often can’t just buy them right away from vendors. Instead, the game pushes you into specific caves and a couple of statue tricks in Limgrave, plus an extra step later in Liurnia to unlock unlimited purchases.
Availability: early finds now, infinite buying later (Limgrave, then Liurnia)
| What you need | Where to get it first | Unlimited vendor unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Smithing Stones (1 & 2) | Limgrave caves (“Limgrave Tunnels”) and statue loot tricks | Bring a specific “Klangperle” obtained in Liurnia to the Twin vendors in the Roundtable |
| Smithing Stones to buy endlessly | — | Roundtable Twin vendors: Smithing Stone 1 for 800 runes each; Smithing Stone 2 for 1600 runes each |
Where Smithing Stones spawn early: the “Tunnel” caves
One of the most reliable early sources is a set of caves whose entrances are marked by a clear symbol once you’ve found the relevant map fragment. The guide points to tunnels such as the “Limgrave Tunnel” and “Liurnia Tunnel” (and more in the same naming pattern).
Inside, you’re meant to hunt for specific crystal clusters: yellow-and-white crystals. Yellow crystals correspond to Smithing Stones, while white “Dark Smithing” crystals correspond to darker variants.
There’s also a practical danger here: sometimes enemies are actively mining these crystals. If you take them from the enemies, they’ll react with hostility—so be ready for a fight before you stock up.
Limgrave statue method: get loot without direct looting
Limgrave also has broken statues containing Smithing Stones. The important limitation: you can’t simply loot these statues, and you also can’t destroy them using your weapon.
To obtain the stones, the trick is to lure a giant troll so it runs over the statue. Once the troll hits the structure, the Smithing Stones become accessible.
The article highlights two locations:
- Near the “Stormhill Shack,” where trolls are positioned in a way that makes the approach straightforward.
- Inside Stormveil Castle, in the courtyard area of the castle.
Stormveil Castle is more involved. The guide advises dealing with a tougher enemy located right by the statue first (since it won’t help you). Then, instead of forcing the troll immediately, follow the path where aggressive birds are located and lure the troll that’s positioned behind them.
Unlocking unlimited Smithing Stone 1 and 2 in the Roundtable
When you’re ready to keep upgrading multiple weapons—and you want a steady supply of Smithing Stones 1 and 2—the next step is to unlock endless sales at the Roundtable.
The Twin vendors there will sell the stones as long as you give them the correct Klangperle. That Klangperle is obtained in Liurnia by exploring the “Crystal Tunnel of Raya Lucaria,” which sits in Liurnia north of Limgrave.
Within that tunnel, you’ll need to defeat an end-boss described as very tough. The advice given is to use blunt weapons such as a hammer to handle it more effectively. After the fight, you receive the Klangperle.
Hand the Klangperle to the Twin vendors in the Roundtable, and from then on you can buy Smithing Stones indefinitely:
- Smithing Stone 1: 800 runes each
- Smithing Stone 2: 1600 runes each
Quick takeaway: stock up first, then scale upgrades
In short, early on you’ll farm crystals inside marked tunnel caves in Limgrave/Liurnia and use the troll-and-statue method in Limgrave—then, once you clear the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel in Liurnia and provide the Klangperle, the Roundtable vendors become your infinite refill source for Smithing Stones 1 and 2.
