Barcelona Miss Out as Josko Gvardiol Extends Manchester City Stay to 2031
Barcelona’s effort to add Josko Gvardiol to Hansi Flick’s defensive options has ended, with the Croatia international committing his future to Manchester City through the summer of 2031.
The Catalan club examined the possibility of signing the 24-year-old late in 2025, identifying him as a defender capable of filling more than one role. Gvardiol’s pace in open-field defending, physical presence and quality in possession made him an attractive option, while his experience at both centre-back and left-back would have offered Flick greater flexibility across his back line.
There was little prospect of a deal, however. Gvardiol was not looking to leave English football and City regarded him as a central part of their plans. The Premier League side made clear that they would not entertain a sale, rather than set a valuation or open negotiations with Barcelona.
City move to secure key defender
City were already preparing improved terms for Gvardiol as Barcelona made their initial checks. Their intention was to reward his performances and protect a player who had become a regular under Pep Guardiola, retaining that status after Enzo Maresca took charge.
Consistent starting opportunities, the prospect of competing for major honours and City’s ability to offer a significant salary increase combined to remove any realistic opening for Barcelona. The defender eventually signed his new contract at the end of July, extending his stay in Manchester until 2031.
The renewal closes off Barcelona’s hopes of returning for Gvardiol in a later window. It also underlines City’s determination to retain leading players despite the uncertainty that surrounded the club during the Premier League’s investigation into 115 financial charges linked to allegations of disguised funding intended to increase revenues.
City denied the allegations throughout the process, which has since produced an unprecedented guilty verdict against the club. The off-field case did not alter Gvardiol’s commitment when Barcelona registered their interest.
Bastoni now Barcelona’s alternative
With Gvardiol unavailable, Barcelona have turned their attention towards Italy. Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni has emerged as Flick’s principal alternative as the club seek a high-level addition to their defence.
Any pursuit of Bastoni would require Barcelona to move decisively in the Serie A market, having missed the chance to recruit the versatile City defender they had viewed as an ideal fit for their squad.
