Nico Paz Stars as Como Hammer Manchester United 4-1
Manchester United were comprehensively beaten 4-1 by Como at the Stadio G. Sinigaglia, a result that exposed major defensive problems in Michael Carrick’s side and left their European campaign in difficulty. Nico Paz struck twice for the Serie A team, with Anastasios Douvikas and Jaka Ramon also scoring before Joshua Zirkzee’s stoppage-time consolation.
Como seize control from the opening minutes
- Como took the lead after two minutes when Paz found space amid a disjointed United defensive shape. Noussair Mazraoui, operating at right-back, was caught out as Como’s wide rotations created the opening.
- United struggled to establish control before the interval. Como completed 669 passes to United’s 546 and repeatedly played through the visitors’ press, with Máximo Perrone and Álex Milla setting the tempo in midfield.
- Carrick responded at half-time by introducing Amad Diallo for Santos and Carlos Baleba for Matheus Cunha, but the changes did not prevent Como from taking command after the restart.
- Douvikas extended the lead before Paz added his second, capitalising on the space behind United’s high defensive line. Ramon then completed the home side’s scoring with a fourth goal.
- Zirkzee, introduced in the 66th minute for United’s captain, scored in the 91st minute after Diallo created the opening in a crowded penalty area.
United had 45 per cent possession and registered four shots on target, but they generated little sustained pressure until the closing stages. Como accumulated 2.04 expected goals and exploited counter-attacking situations five times over the match.
Back line exposed by Como’s movement
United’s goalkeeper made four saves but received little protection as Como repeatedly broke into dangerous areas. He was beaten twice by Paz and had limited prospect of stopping the finishes from Douvikas and Ramon.
Mazraoui contributed to 11 clearances but found it difficult to deal with the hosts’ fluid attacking patterns. On the opposite flank, Diogo Dalot attempted 13 crosses without finding a meaningful return, while United’s defensive unit failed to combine its attacking and covering responsibilities.
Matthijs de Ligt was repeatedly drawn away from the centre by Douvikas and was replaced by Harry Amass in the 79th minute. Harry Maguire won interceptions and aerial duels, but the central partnership lacked the pace to protect the spaces either side of them as Paz and Lucas Da Cunha drove Como forward.
The decision to hold a high line with Maguire and De Ligt proved costly. Como’s attacking players consistently found room behind the defence, turning an early setback into a heavy defeat.
Midfield changes fail to halt second-half collapse
Mason Mount worked to support transitions but was frequently bypassed by Como’s circulation. The Belgian deep midfielder kept possession efficiently but was unable to provide the defensive authority needed to stop the home side’s breaks.
Santos had been booked in the 25th minute before his half-time withdrawal, having struggled to contain Paz between the lines. Baleba, his replacement in midfield alongside Diallo’s introduction, was cautioned five minutes after entering and could not prevent United from conceding three second-half goals.
Cunha was also substituted at the interval after finding little room to influence the contest behind the striker. United’s captain attempted to lead the press but often did so without sufficient support and was taken off in the 66th minute as Carrick sought a more direct attacking option.
Diallo and Zirkzee offer limited encouragement
Diallo gave United greater dribbling threat after the break and was one of the few visitors able to beat his opponent in one-versus-one situations. His pass created Zirkzee’s late goal.
Zirkzee’s finish was his main contribution after coming on, while his hold-up play offered United a more effective focal point in attack. Bryan Mbeumo had been largely contained on the right before being replaced late by Lacey, who was booked shortly after entering.
Amass also received 11 minutes of Champions League action following De Ligt’s substitution, although the outcome had already been settled.
Next fixtures
- Como are scheduled to face Sassuolo in Serie A on 24 October 2026.
- Manchester United’s next listed fixture is against Bournemouth in the Premier League on 25 October 2026.
The scale of the defeat will intensify scrutiny of Carrick’s defensive organisation. His half-time alterations acknowledged United’s problems, but Como continued to find openings with ease as the visitors’ structure deteriorated further after the interval.
