Andres impresses at Brighton after £19m Stuttgart switch
Brighton midfielder Andres has made an immediate impression after his summer move from Stuttgart, contributing a goal and an assist across his first 200 minutes for the club. The 21-year-old Spain Under-21 international arrived for a reported £19 million (€23m) and has featured in three matches.
His early displays have come in emphatic Brighton wins, including the EFL Cup success against Manchester United and the 3-0 Premier League victory over Arsenal. Having arrived with only one Bundesliga season behind him, Andres has quickly become one of the more closely watched players on the south coast.
Quick facts
- Andres joined Brighton from Stuttgart this summer for a reported £19m (€23m).
- The 21-year-old has recorded one goal and one assist in 200 minutes.
- He played 41 times during his only season with Stuttgart.
- Brighton have him under contract until 2031.
- Real Madrid received €11.5m through a 50 per cent sell-on provision.
Andres spent seven years in Real Madrid’s youth ranks before leaving Spain. Most of his football came with the academy and Castilla, while his senior involvement in the 2024-25 campaign amounted to three appearances and 37 minutes.
He moved to Germany in pursuit of regular first-team opportunities and delivered a productive debut campaign with Stuttgart. Madrid retained return clauses as well as the sell-on arrangement, prompting discussion that the club could bring their former prospect back after his 41-game season.
That option was not taken up, clearing the way for Brighton to complete their deal. Madrid’s financial interest ended with the Premier League transfer, although the sell-on clause returned €11.5m to the Spanish club.
Andres has nevertheless left open the prospect of wearing the Real Madrid shirt again. “I hope to come back one day, but it is not something I am considering now,” he said when asked about a possible return.
Any Madrid pursuit in the future would now require a major new agreement with Brighton, given the length of the player’s contract. His start in England has also brought comparisons with Rodri, a label he will seek to justify as the Premier League season develops.
Brighton’s prospects of retaining their leading young players may also be shaped by the situation around head coach Fabian Hurzeler. The German has been linked with Manchester United should the Old Trafford club replace Michael Carrick, with the possibility of departures among key players a concern if Hurzeler were to leave.
