Onimusha: Way of the Sword Returns With New Trailer and Sword Combat Lore
Capcom is gearing up to bring Onimusha back after a two-decade absence, with Onimusha: Way of the Sword set to arrive on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 in early September 2026—and a new trailer that spells out the game’s oni/genma lore alongside its sword-combat focus.
Onimusha returns: Kyoto’s dimensional rifts and Musashi’s fate
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is scheduled for release on September 4, 2026, marking the franchise’s return after a 20-year gap. The announcement trailer begins by revisiting the series’ core mythology: Oni are tasked with keeping the corrupted Genma from entering the world of humans—but that protection is failing as rifts between dimensions multiply across Kyoto.
Kyoto will serve as the game’s setting and is described as a “small open world,” a first for the franchise. The title “Onimusha” refers to fighters who inherit Oni power through a gauntlet that can draw souls from defeated enemies. The trailer also frames Miyamoto Musashi—famed for his dedication to swordsmanship—as someone who was not “destined” to become an Onimusha, only for circumstances to force him into that role.
“Ultimate sword game” combat: parries, endurance pressure, and Issen
Capcom positions Onimusha: Way of the Sword as its “ultimate sword game,” with a combat system centered on mastering parries and deflections. The goal is to unbalance opponents through tight defensive timing, then exploit openings while simultaneously shaving down both health and endurance. The endurance element is described as functioning similarly to posture in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
The trailer also highlights precision dodges triggered at the last possible moment, plus sword duels that activate when two blades strike at exactly the same time. While the overall structure is said to be different from the older PS2-era entries, familiar mechanics are expected to remain: the gauntlet’s soul-aspiration system, where soul color can determine whether it’s used as a currency or for healing.
One of the key high-risk tools shown is the Issen counterattack—an explosive, timing-dependent move that only works at the exact instant when Musashi receives a hit.
What to watch next
- Release timing: September 4, 2026
- Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2
- Core focus: kyoto’s first-for-the-franchise “small open world” scale and whether combat depth matches the “ultimate sword game” claim
With the trailer already clarifying both the Genma/Oni premise and the defensive-swordplay loop, the next big question for players will be how the Kyoto layout supports encounters and whether the promise of dual resource pressure (health plus endurance) holds up beyond the early combat demonstrations.
