Genetic Mastery Timed Research: Choose Mega Mewtwo X or Y in Pokémon GO
Pokémon GO Fest: Global 2026 is underway now and will wrap up at 7 PM local time tonight. The headline feature is a free Timed Research titled Genetic Mastery, which rewards Mega Energy that you can use to evolve Mewtwo into either Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y—depending on the branch you follow.
This guide breaks down every step for Genetic Mastery in Pokémon GO, lists the rewards, and explains which Mega Mewtwo variant is the better pick. If you’re having trouble finding the questline, we’ll also cover where to locate it.
There’s also a new code you can redeem in Pokémon GO for free items as part of the Global GO Fest 2026 celebration.
Why Can’t I See the Genetic Mastery Timed Research in Pokémon GO?
If you’re playing Pokémon GO right now but can’t find the Genetic Mastery Timed Research to earn Mega Mewtwo, you may be looking in the wrong place.
To locate it, tap the binoculars icon in the bottom-right corner of the main map screen. Then open the Research tab and select Events. Because this isn’t part of your regular research list, it will show up under Events. It should appear directly under the Global Challenge section.

Should You Choose Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y?
If your goal is the strongest option for raids and general battles in Pokémon GO, the better pick is Mega Mewtwo Y. It’s a pure Psychic-type Pokémon, staying true to the standard Mewtwo’s typing, and it’s positioned as an upgraded attacker with high raw damage.
That said, Mega Mewtwo X isn’t a poor choice. Both forms can hold their own in fights, but X has a lower base attack value. On top of that, because it’s also Fighting-typed, it can’t fully benefit from the same typing advantages that Y leans into.
In simple terms: X is more of an all-around option, while Y is the one that leans hardest into being a powerful Psychic-type attacker. If you want to use Mega Mewtwo X as a Fighting-type raid option, there are better specialized choices available, such as Lucario.
When Does the Genetic Mastery Research Go Away?
The Genetic Mastery Timed Research in Pokémon GO ends on Sunday, July 12, at midnight local time. That means you need to finish every task to secure the Mega Energy required for Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y.
