Modnation Racers Returns on PS3 With Fan Fixes and Online Play

One of the PS3 era’s most underrated cult hits is back, and this time it’s living in 4K with full online support. Modnation Racers—long remembered for its creative kart racing and deep customization—has been revived by fans on PC, giving players what the original platform never quite managed to deliver for the long haul.

The PlayStation 3’s early days were defined by a painful launch price, but the system ultimately became one of Sony’s more complete consoles. Even so, the PS3 also feels like a graveyard for certain hidden gems—games that had a passionate following but never got the kind of sustained attention that would keep them alive forever.

Sure, there are the obvious PS3 staples people still talk about, like Infamous, Resistance, and the earliest Killzone entries. What’s more interesting, though, are the titles that didn’t spend as much time in the spotlight. The Puppeteer, Rag Doll Kung Fu, and Tokyo Jungle come to mind, but one favorite stands out: Modnation Racers. It’s finally getting the recognition it deserved.

Modnation Racers Is Back in 4K on PC, With Full Online Play

Online Support and Crossplay Make This a Real Revival

If you missed the original run, Modnation Racers is a kart racer built around customization and player-made content—complete with that “make and share” energy that many people associate with LittleBigPlanet. The game launched on PS3 in 2010 and, even though it had a dedicated community, it ultimately went fully offline in 2018.

Modnation Racers also marked the first game from United Front Games, a studio that later went on to create Sleeping Dogs. Its PS Vita follow-up, Road Trip, was handled by San Diego Studio.

Because Modnation Racers leaned heavily on online features, the shift to being offline—and being effectively tied to the PS3 forever—did more than just slow things down. It effectively shut the game out of the modern era. That situation continued until a Twitter user known as PStripl3 reported they’d found a way to bring it back and make it playable on PC with full online functionality.

That revival comes with more than just “it boots.” The PC version is reported to improve on the original by adding 4K output and 60fps performance for the first time, along with enhancements, crossplay, and support for the game’s large catalog of crossover downloadable content. Twitter user StormslayerDev, who shared the revival details first, even demonstrated cosmetic content in action, including skins tied to Sly, Sackboy, and Kratos.

It’s unclear whether this emulation-style revival will be embraced by Sony—or whether it might eventually be removed, especially since another separate revival effort reportedly still exists. Either way, it’s hard not to feel good seeing a long-running cult title get another chance years later. It’s also a bittersweet thought that United Front Games isn’t around to witness how strongly players still cherish its first major work.

The four-day event, taking place in Covent Garden, is a good opportunity for both newer players and long-time fans to relax, hang out, and play games.
