World of Warcraft 2024 Roadmap Details New Raids, Dungeons, and Story Chapters

Blizzard has laid out its 2024 plans for both World of Warcraft and World of Warcraft Classic, outlining what’s coming in the form of new patches, quests, raids, dungeons, and other updates—along with the timing for its next major story chapters.

What Blizzard’s 2024 roadmap signals for live World of Warcraft

For the mainline World of Warcraft, Blizzard says the first half of 2024 will bring three additional Dragonflight content releases. These drops include a fourth season built around new dungeons, raids, quests, and rewards.

Positioned around those releases, Blizzard also expects the alpha and beta phases for the next expansion, The War Within, to begin in Spring and Summer 2024 (Northern Hemisphere). That means players who want early access to the next campaign will have testing windows to watch for as the year progresses.

At this point, the expectation is that The War Within will launch in a polished state—after iteration based on player and internal feedback—between Summer and Autumn 2024 (again, Northern Hemisphere). The expansion’s package is expected to include a brand-new story campaign, new talents, additional delves, fresh zones, new dungeons and raids, plus a new PvP season.

While Blizzard hasn’t released everything in full detail yet, the roadmap framing makes it clear that 2024 is intended to keep both endgame and story momentum running, rather than treating the next expansion as a single “wait until release” moment.

The War Within: saga framing, campaign chapters, and the PvE pitch

Early story information places The War Within at the start of The Worldsoul Saga. Blizzard describes it as a “grand adventure 20 years in the making,” which sets the tone for a longer-running narrative arc rather than a standalone expansion plot.

In that campaign structure, Blizzard says the expansion will include multiple chapters: The War Within, Midnight, and The Last Titan. The pitch for players is straightforward—being able to “save the world” once again as the saga begins.

Blizzard’s description of where players will go is also more specific. Starting with The War Within, the roadmap promises trips to “never-before-seen subterranean worlds filled with hidden wonders and lurking perils.” It further narrows the focus to “the dark depths of the Nerubian Empire,” where the malicious Harbinger of the Void is described as gathering arachnid forces with the goal of bringing Azeroth to its knees.

For players who care about exploration and dungeon-scale storytelling, that wording matters: it implies new geography and risk-heavy locations tied directly into the expansion’s core fantasy, not just isolated quest hubs.

World of Warcraft Classic: Cataclysm timing and what else is coming

Blizzard’s roadmap also includes plans for World of Warcraft Classic, where the focus is on expansion content and recurring community-facing events.

For 2024, the roadmap indicates that Cataclysm Classic will arrive around Summer 2024 (Northern Hemisphere). That expansion is described as bringing a major story campaign, raids, dungeons, a PvP battleground, and additional content beyond those headline items.

Before Cataclysm Classic launches, Blizzard says players can look forward to a set of other additions, including new raids, runes, and PvP events. The approach here appears designed to keep Classic progression active and varied rather than pausing until the next big expansion drop.

Why these plans matter: pacing, testing, and the “keep momentum” strategy

Blizzard’s messaging around the roadmap emphasizes delivery and continued iteration, along with a clear focus on player response. Executive producer Holly Longdale—speaking from Blizzard Entertainment—said: “This time last year, I posted our first roadmap. I’m so thankful to our team for seeing it all become real, and then some!” She added that promising content is only the first step, stressing that Blizzard continues to learn and evolve with each release and announcement. Longdale also said the team is “fully focused on listening and responding to you and building for a strong future in Azeroth for all of us.”

Longdale also highlighted the breadth of what’s already been in motion during the year, listing six Dragonflight content updates, Wrath content updates, and the return of the Icecrown Citadel raid dungeon. She also referenced the launch of Classic Hardcore, BlizzCon 2023, an “incredible Race to World First” in Dragonflight Season 3, and the more recent arrival of Classic Season of Discovery. The message is that Blizzard wants to maintain momentum rather than treat roadmapping as a one-off announcement.

  • Steady live support in 2024: Dragonflight is getting three more content drops early in the year, including a fourth season.
  • Clear pre-expansion testing window: alpha and beta for The War Within are expected in Spring and Summer 2024 (Northern Hemisphere).
  • Expansion arrival aimed for mid-to-late 2024: The War Within is expected between Summer and Autumn 2024 (Northern Hemisphere), after feedback-driven polishing.
  • Classic progression won’t pause: Cataclysm Classic is targeted around Summer 2024, with other raids, runes, and PvP events scheduled beforehand.
