Black Flag Resynced Launch Bug Can Wipe Hours of Progress—Avoid It

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is out today, and early review chatter suggests many players are going to have a great time. Still, there’s one launch-day bug that’s already been flagged—and it can wipe out hours of progress if you hit it at the wrong moment.

Game File’s Stephen Totilo is the one to thank for bringing the issue to attention. He’s been testing the remake ahead of release and ran into a problem that reportedly cost him around five hours, which is exactly the kind of setback that can turn a smooth playthrough into a frustrating reload cycle.

Quick facts

  • Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced launched today.
  • A launch-day bug has been reported that can cost players roughly five hours of progress.
  • Stephen Totilo shared details after playing the game ahead of release.
  • The issue appears tied to unfinished side quests in Kingston.
  • Ubisoft is aware and working on a fix, but a timing window hasn’t been announced.

Unfinished Templar Hunts Are To Blame

Inside Resynced, there are side missions called Templar Hunts. They aren’t required to complete the main storyline, but finishing them does unlock the remake’s Templar Keys.

Totilo started some of those Templar Hunts in Kingston. He later left the area to handle other objectives, but he didn’t return to finish the side content he’d begun.

When he eventually came back to Kingston to continue along the game’s main path, the unfinished side quests became a blocker. Because those Templar Hunts weren’t completed, he couldn’t progress further—and since the main story also asked him to move forward in the same region, the blocked side content effectively locked him out of continuing the narrative there.

At that point, Totilo likely had to revert to an earlier save made before he left those Kingston Templar Hunt objectives unfinished. That rewind is what reportedly ate about five hours of gameplay, and it’s important to note that the exact loss can vary: you might trigger the problem after a short trip away, or if you’re gone for longer than that, you could lose even more.

Ubisoft Is Aware Of The Bug And Working On A Fix

It isn’t fully confirmed whether this particular sequence is what causes the softlock, or whether the same kind of issue can happen whenever incomplete side quests collide with the main quest when both are tied to the same region. Either way, the key takeaway is that Ubisoft has acknowledged the problem and is working on a solution.

The downside: there’s still no announced date for when the fix will arrive. If you’re planning to jump in today—or at any point before the first patch lands—consider being careful about leaving Templar Hunts unfinished, especially in Kingston.

There’s also a chance a day-one patch could already include this issue, since many early fixes target exactly these kinds of progression blockers. How soon the team can resolve it (and how severe the problem is in real-world play) will ultimately determine whether you’re affected for days or only briefly.
