Edward Kenway’s Black Flag Resynced Prologue Walkthrough: Collectibles Guide
Edward Kenway kicks off Assassin’s Creed Black Flag: Resynced with a rough prologue that wastes no time throwing you into pirate chaos—especially once your ship catches fire. This walkthrough-style guide follows the first mission step by step, highlighting moments where you can grab Collectibles and other loot as you push from the sea to the island’s interior.
Task Search: Mission Start and Objectives
Edward Kenway is the playable pirate protagonist for the opening mission. You begin aboard a burning vessel in the middle of immediate action, then quickly transition to the shore after you’re washed up on an island. From there, the goal is clear: find a path to build your wealth, starting with the first objective chain of the prologue.

Prologue: Cape Bonavista in June 1715
Your adventure starts in Cape Bonavista in June 1715. You’re right in the middle of a battle, and unfortunately for your survival odds, your ship is already ablaze and taking heavy damage—definitely not the kind of welcome a pirate hopes for.
With the Helmsman gone, your first job as Edward is to seize control of the ship. Move east and interact with the wheel.
Once you’re aiming, a curved white arc appears to show the shot trajectory. You’ll need to sink five enemy ships during this section. Keep these combat notes in mind:
- Aim for the hull to inflict the most damage.
- Slow down to enable sharper turns, letting you close distance and fight at a better angle.
After you finish blasting the ships apart, you’ll be thrown from your own vessel. A brief cutscene follows, and then you regain control of Edward Kenway—trying his best to avoid Davy Jones’s locker. Next up: see how well he handles swimming when the sea gets involved.
Head to Shore: Chase and First Misunderstanding
Move southeast toward the burning wreckage, then dive underwater to continue. Keep swimming forward until a cutscene triggers. After a small misunderstanding, you’ll be tasked with chasing down an Assassin.
Cape Bonavista Collectibles: Animals and Secrets
Here’s a reference list of Collectibles, Animals, and Secrets available in Cape Bonavista. Some items won’t be obtainable until later in the game, so be aware that your first pass may not include everything.
- Jaguar
- Howler Monkey
- Wild Pig
Find the Assassin: Viewpoint Setup and Climb Routes
Keep heading southeast after the Assassin sprints away. You’ll push deeper into the island’s lush greenery. Run up a tree, then jump across to a broken bridge. After that, travel east across the next bridge—at which point you’ll be prompted to look up.
You’ll spot the Assassin diving off a tall wooden structure. This marks your first Viewpoint. Before you leap down after them, you need to synchronize your surroundings. Doing so will reveal Collectibles on your map around your current area.
Before committing fully to the climb, you can stop by a hut on the left to collect loot. When you’re ready to follow the main route, climb east toward the structure.
More loot is available near the hut on the left, and additional items can be found by the skeleton on the right. As you move toward the objective, you’ll need to jump between a split tree and then onto a platform. From there, start climbing up to the tower’s top. At the summit, synchronize once more, then leap off.
Continue Chasing the Assassin: Platforms, Water, and Duncan
As the Assassin makes a run and warns you to keep your distance, you can still close the gap. Head south, travel along the tree trunk, push through the trees, and reach the platform near the waterfall.
From this position, go southeast across the beams and up to the next platform via the broken bridge.
Follow the path to the south and you’ll come across another couple of huts you can loot. You’ll also notice your new ally, Duncan, heading off toward the west.
To catch up with Duncan again, drop down into the water and follow him along the stream.
Duncan Walpole Fight: Melee Tutorial and Rewards
This is your chance to get payback for the gunshot. The mission transitions into a melee combat tutorial while you’re set up against Duncan Walpole.
Lock On, Attack, and Break Defenses
- Lock on — R3 / Right Stick
- Attack — R1 / RB
- Keep attacking until the yellow bar above the white health bar is depleted
- A blue spark appears, indicating you’ve broken the enemy’s defense
- Attack again to reduce his health bar
Parrying and Dodging
- Parry — L1 / LB
- Wait until there’s a blue spark, then Parry
- Dodge — Press Circle / B to dodge
- Repeat Parry, Dodge, and Attack until you’ve chipped away at his health
Rewards for defeating Duncan Walpole:
- Duncan Walpole’s Robes
- Glass Cube
After Duncan is beaten, head southwest to your next Viewpoint and synchronize it. If you jump into the water to the east rather than straight ahead, you’ll find an Underwater Chest.
At that underwater location, you’ll be prompted to hold L2 / LT to observe your surroundings and note loot and Collectibles.
Make Your Way to the Boat: Clearing Soldiers and Boarding
Continue southwest, and you’ll see soldiers roaming the island. They’re holding a merchant hostage, and the next mission step is to clear them out. There are five soldiers total.
- Press R3 / Right Stick to enable Eagle Vision. Enemies appear in red outlines.
- Press L2 / LT and hover over targets to tag them, so they remain visible to you even outside Eagle Vision.
- Press Square / X to crouch and hide in the bushes.
- Press Triangle / Y to knock them out.
If you want a quieter approach, use the bushes around the area to sneak up and take them down. You can also press the right D-Pad to whistle to draw their attention. Alternatively, you can simply rush in and defeat them all.
No matter which method you use, you should aim to reach the merchant once the soldiers are dealt with.
When you’re ready to move on, swim up to the boat. The next objective is to sail out of the bay.
Basic Sailing Controls
- Press X / A to open sails
- Press X / A again to fully open sails
- Press Circle / B to lower sails
After leaving the bay and entering open waters, your route continues toward Lively Havana.
