Minecraft Update Adds the Long-Awaited Ability to Sit Down
Minecraft’s latest update has players celebrating a surprisingly small addition with huge roleplay value: you can finally sit down.
Sitting arrives after years of requests
Minecraft has been running for two decades, and for just as long, builders have created everything from stylish houses to deep mine networks and full-on civilizations. The one thing that kept feeling missing, though, was a basic “rest” animation—until now.
For years, players could sleep in beds to pass time and recover, but there wasn’t a real way to sit after mining for diamonds or fighting off monsters. The closest workarounds were limited: boats and mine carts could be used for certain “sitting” moments, but they weren’t the same as a true, dedicated action.
The sit feature was revealed during a deeper look at Minecraft’s upcoming update, which is also set to include straw beds, a new biome, and additional additions beyond the headline change. Sitting will be available through a new cushion item, allowing players to place themselves in a seated position. The development team also shared that they expect players to come up with creative uses for cushions—potentially in ways the studio didn’t even think of.
Release timing is planned for this fall for all players. If you have access to preview builds of Minecraft, you can try the sitting feature right now.
Community reaction: “massive” and finally mod-free
The reaction has been especially strong because players have been asking for the ability to sit for 17 years. While it may sound minor to outsiders, Minecraft’s audience is heavily into roleplay, and this update removes the need for mods or awkward substitutes to do something as simple as sitting down.
One player, reacting to the announcement video, described the change as feeling “MASSIVE” without mods. Another joked about the excitement level, saying the cheer they gave at the reveal was so big it felt like Mojang had announced an “End Drop.”
What else is changing in Minecraft’s leadership
Separately from the gameplay update, Microsoft has begun restructuring parts of Xbox earlier this week. As part of those internal plans, Minecraft leadership will now report directly to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma.
Sharma said the Minecraft IP has been “massively underinvested,” even though the brand already includes many spin-offs, a large amount of merchandise, and a film that brought in just under a billion dollars at the box office.
What to watch next
- Preview players can test the new cushion-based sitting action now.
- Full rollout is expected this fall for everyone.
- Alongside sitting, the update is also set to add straw beds and a new biome.
