Mass Effect 3 Finale Guide: Priority Earth Choices and Ending Explained

Mass Effect 3’s “The Finale” wraps up the Priority: Earth finale and, more broadly, the entire Mass Effect Trilogy. This guide section breaks down the key moments you’ll hit right at the end—what unlocks, what choices change outcomes, and how the game’s final conversation structure works.

Video Guide Overview: The Return

If you’re playing with the Extended Cut installed, you’ll get an extra sequence where the Normandy swings back into the fight alongside Sword Team near the Citadel. After that, Admiral Hackett receives a report indicating that someone—almost certainly Shepard—has managed to reach the Citadel. That development means the Crucible should be able to dock with the Citadel very soon.

From there, Shepard is on the Citadel and forced out through the entry point during the Extended Cut sequence. They quickly grab their pistol and move down a dark corridor while talking with Anderson. Anderson is there because he was able to get through the Conduit Beam after Shepard did. This is also where you can collect the final Morality points in the game:

  • Choose “I’ve been better” for +2 Paragon Points.
  • Choose “I’m okay” for +2 Renegade Points.

If you’re skipping the Extended Cut beat entirely, the path forward is straightforward: go down a hallway littered with bodies, push through the door that opens, take the ramp, cross the chasm, and then climb up into the central chamber.

Climactic Conversation: The Illusive Man

Once you enter the central chamber, the story delivers its climactic encounter with The Illusive Man. This moment is the payoff of your earlier dialogue choices with him during three prior missions: “Priority: Mars,” “Priority: Thessia,” and “Priority: Cerberus Headquarters.”

How the Charm/Intimidate unlock works

  • If you consistently selected either all Charm options or all Intimidate options across those three earlier conversations, and you also have a Reputation Bar that’s completely full (100%), then this conversation will unlock both Charm and Intimidate options.
  • You still have conditions to meet: during this specific conversation, you must choose only Charm and/or Intimidate options. If you select even one of the white options shown on the right side, you’ll be shut out of the outcome at the very end.

What determines the confrontation’s ending

The next decision determines how the final confrontation ends. If you met the requirements above, you’ll be able to pick from the Persuasion choices below:

  • “But you already have” — Shepard convinces the Illusive Man that he’s been indoctrinated. He then commits suicide to keep from harming humanity.
  • “Then you’ve failed humanity” — Shepard pushes the Illusive Man into attacking. You can use the Renegade Interrupt to shoot him down; if you don’t, you’ll suffer a Critical Mission Failure.

Negative-outcome options you will always have

Even if the confrontation doesn’t go your way, you will always be offered the two options listed here—but they lead to a bad result for the conversation:

  • “You’re theirs now” / “You’re pathetic” — The Illusive Man forces Anderson to the ground to execute him. After that, you’ll get two Renegade Interrupt prompts to shoot the Illusive Man. If you miss the first one, Anderson is killed. If you miss the second, you’ll trigger Critical Mission Failure.

After the confrontation: Crucible docking and final scenes

Once The Illusive Man is dead, Shepard will open the ward arms to let the Crucible dock. If your EMS is low, the docking will still happen, but the Crucible will be under Reaper attack.

If The Illusive Man does not kill himself, he delivers final words while staring out toward Earth. Shepard then shares a touching scene with Anderson before he eventually passes away—however, this only happens if The Illusive Man didn’t execute Anderson.

Unfortunately, the Crucible isn’t able to fire. Shepard attempts to reach the control panel, but collapses. Then Shepard is carried up to the trilogy’s final area.

SPOILERS: The Catalyst and the Ending Options

OF ALL THE PLACES IN THE WALKTHROUGH, THIS SECTION HAS MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR THE GAME. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Also note: the numbers below apply to the Legendary Edition only. For the original 2012 version (including both release 1.00 and the Extended Cut), check the Endings page.

Shepard meets the Catalyst, the force behind the Reapers. The Catalyst explains that Shepard can break the Reaper cycle using the Conduit. The options that appear—and what they mean—vary based on your decisions and on how much EMS you have. If you ask, the Catalyst can clarify what each option does, and it includes extra dialogue if you completed the Leviathan DLC.

Ending choices by EMS threshold

Your available options depend on your EMS level:

  • 3,100 EMS or less: there’s only one option, and it’s always extremely harmful for the galaxy. Which one you get is determined by your Collector Base choice at the end of Mass Effect 2:
    • If you destroyed the Collector Base (or began the game without using the Genesis 2 DLC), you’ll only have the Destroy option.
    • If you saved the Collector Base, you’ll only have the Control option.
  • 3,200 EMS or higher: you can choose between Destroy and Control. At 4,200 EMS or higher, those choices won’t harm the galaxy.
  • 5,200 EMS or more: you unlock a third option, Synthesis.
  • If you destroyed the Collector Base (or started fresh without Genesis 2), you’ll only have the Destroy option.
  • If you saved the Collector Base, you’ll only have the Control option.

Ultimately, the guide leaves it to you to decide which option is best. None of these choices carry Morality Points or any other alignment tracking. For more detail on what each ending is and how the endings can differ, you’re directed to the Endings page.

And that’s it—you’ve completed Mass Effect 3.
