Onimusha: Way of the Sword Launch Trailer—Now Live on PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, PC
Capcom has announced that Onimusha: Way of the Sword is now available on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC—bringing a fresh entry to the long-running Onimusha line and pitching it squarely into a dark fantasy retelling of Edo-period Japan.
A new Onimusha lands on every major platform
The release spans four ecosystems: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, Nintendo’s Switch 2, and PC. With the game now out, players on both console and desktop can jump into a sword-focused action adventure set in a twisted version of Kyoto.
Kyoto under Miasma: the premise that drives the combat
At the center of the story is Kyoto during the Edo period, portrayed as a city corrupted by ominous Miasma clouds. Those distortions push monsters into the world of the living—called Genma—turning the capital into a place of ongoing terror and panic.
The player follows Miyamoto Musashi, described as a young, impulsive samurai who arrives in Kyoto to prove his superiority on the path of the sword. His plans, however, are thrown off by events that take an unexpected and strange turn as the city’s supernatural threat escalates.
- Kyoto is depicted as a historic Edo-era capital warped by Miasma.
- Genma are the invading monstrosities brought from a hellish depths into the living world.
- Miyamoto Musashi is the central protagonist, thrust into the crisis.
- The Oni Glove (Manopla Oni) is the key artifact enabling Musashi’s supernatural power.
The Oni Glove adds a supernatural layer to sword action
Musashi’s main tool is the Manopla Oni, an alleged mystical artifact that grants powers beyond human limits. Beyond providing the strength needed to destroy Genma, the glove can absorb Genma souls and convert them into additional power, allowing the user to further enhance their abilities.
Capcom also highlights an unanswered mystery tied to the glove: the voice that can be heard resonating from within it.
Musashi’s duels—and who inspired his on-screen look
The game’s conflict is framed around high-stakes battles against formidable opponents whose martial skill is on par with Musashi’s. Capcom stresses that the campaign is built for bloody duels, with powerful enemies and the constant question of whether Musashi will triumph—or die in the attempt.
On the presentation side, the protagonist’s face model for this interpretation of Miyamoto Musashi is based on Toshiro Mifune, an iconic figure from Japanese samurai cinema, recruited specifically as a reference point for the character design.
Kyoto is also presented through recognizable landmarks, including the Kiyomizu-dera temple—now described as being distorted by the same Miasma affecting the city’s overall appearance.
