Astra Project: A Sailor Moon Meets Persona Magical Girl Game Is Coming
Persona fans have a busy road ahead, but there’s still plenty of downtime between Atlus releases. With Persona 4 Revival on the way and Persona 6 following later, players who have already worked through everything in Persona 3 Reload may be looking for something with a similar rhythm and mood. The good news is that a brand-new project called Astrae Oratio is scheduled for a 2026 launch, and it aims to deliver a familiar mix: student-life storytelling, turn-based battles, and magical girl flair.
On first glance, Astrae Oratio is built to feel recognizable to anyone who likes Persona. The reveal highlights flashy opening screens, damage numbers popping during combat, and—yes—guns. Not every character is armed in the same way as the cast of Atlus’ Persona 5; the trailer only shows one fighter using a firearm, while others brandish distinct tools such as throwable explosives and light-blade-style weapons. Still, players noticing the comments on the reveal trailer weren’t just fixating on Persona parallels—its character designs also nod to ’90s magical girl anime aesthetics, with Sailor Moon being the most obvious comparison. That “anime magician school” pitch is intriguing, though details are currently thin.
Even the basic question of where Astrae Oratio will land is unclear. The on-screen user interface hints at a mobile release, but it could just as easily appear on PC, or even arrive on consoles as a full release.
There’s also another upcoming title for fans of the genre: a “Magical Girls” Steam RPG that combines Persona 5-style presentation and social-link ideas with the roguelike structure associated with Hades 2.
Astrae Oratio Puts Players in Charge of a School of Magician Girls
Astrae Oratio appears to revolve around celebrating magic, but the setting is intentionally limited in scope: only dozens of magicians exist at any given time, with just one per district. Players take the role of a school leader who has been given the title of Shunin. From there, the job is to develop the girls’ magical abilities and guide their personalities during the run-up to a major magic expo later in the year.
Keeping things running smoothly will be a major part of the role. When conflicts show up—or when they’re prevented before they happen—those clashes play out as turn-based fights. The game looks set to include the usual genre ingredients, including limit-break style power moments and the kind of turn-by-turn choices players expect in this category. Based on what was shown, the party setup seems built around three characters at a time.
Identify the silhouettes before the countdown finishes.
Since this is a school-based magical academy, trouble can only go so far—though there’s still plenty to do. Alongside combat and cinematic scenes where characters interact and share parts of their stories, the trailer also suggests management-style gameplay. Phone calls and dressing the students in different outfits are both shown, implying that as the head of the school, you’ll influence how the girls spend their time. With the characters revealed so far featuring weapon styles that appear tied to their look and background, Astrae Oratio could be a solid fit for players who want a longer JRPG experience.
The highly anticipated JRPG Persona 6 also received a notable update recently, one that may help hint at where Atlus’ next project stands.
Astrae Oratio is All About Its Characters
At the moment, six characters have been officially revealed for Astrae Oratio, though several of them still come with only partial information:
- Tanaka Erin — Raised in Japan and proud of her background, Tanaka’s Irish mother gives her a distinctly Western look. She discovered her magic by accident after running into fellow magicians Riria and Anna. In battle, the pink-haired Tanaka uses both a staff and an energy blade.
- Anna M. Battenberg — A noble girl facing pressure from her family to secure a partner, Anna lives with her family’s retired butler, who is also eager to find her a match.
- Fujiwara Riria — Coming from a famous magician family, this blue-haired magic specialist has decided—mysteriously—to attend school and live as a normal student.
- Mitsuko Luna — Mitsuko is a white-haired student from a middle-class household that became wealthy due to a real-estate boom. An only child, she refuses to let that success make her arrogant, though she carries a focused, composed attitude. Her combat stands out because she fights with a gun in the style of Persona 5 characters, while also using ice magic.
- Akitsu Akina — A potential fan favorite, Akitsu spends her free time hunting ghosts and investigating urban legends tied to difficult family situations. In combat, she fills the role of the group’s explosives specialist.
- ??? — Possibly a villain, the trailer’s stinger shows a fiery-looking figure. With short dark hair covering her eyes and ominous-sounding dialogue, she’s clearly aiming for an edgy tone. However, the headphones resting around her neck suggest she’s still young—and could potentially be brought back from a dark path.
Beyond the character roster, the Astrae Oratio website expands the worldbuilding. A “Dominion Management Console” is described as the everyday bureaucracy that handles routine school affairs through a swarm of busy staff. There’s also a “Special District Office,” where the player character—serving as Shunin—works.
Hiwagishiakari Ai is presented as Shunin’s boss and the person who hired him. Her bio, along with a somewhat unsettling bodyguard doll created for Shunin, suggests players should pay close attention to her. Finally, the wider magical society is governed by a mysterious “Other Cabinet.” Within it, the Death Mask and its built construct “persona” called the Signalman are said to oversee everything. Visually and thematically, the Death Mask group feels like the most likely candidate for this anime-styled game’s true antagonist.
With the rest of the game’s specifics still being kept under wraps, anyone hoping to dive deeper—especially players drawn to anime-style games, Persona, Sailor Moon, or the broader magical girl atmosphere—will need to stay alert for further updates. For now, the best way to follow developments is to bookmark the Astrae Oratio website.
