Zirkzee Seals Netherlands’ 2-1 Nations League Win Over Serbia
The Netherlands edged Serbia 2-1 in Eindhoven after Joshua Zirkzee’s half-time introduction gave Xavi Hernandez’s side the attacking reference point they needed. Teun Koopmeiners put the hosts ahead, Mihajlo Cvetkovic replied quickly for Serbia, and Zirkzee settled a demanding Nations League A Group 2 contest with 18 minutes remaining.
Netherlands control possession but Serbia threaten
The Dutch had 65% of the ball and spent long spells working around Serbia’s compact defensive shape, but the visitors remained dangerous through direct breaks. Serbia produced 15 attempts and continued to test the home side after falling behind for a second time.
Koopmeiners opened the scoring in the 31st minute, arriving at the right moment to finish after helping drive the Netherlands forward from midfield. Serbia’s response came four minutes later, when Aleksa Terzic supplied Cvetkovic in transition and the forward made the most of the opportunity before the break.

Zirkzee changes the shape of the attack
The opening period had left the Netherlands without enough presence in the penalty area, and Hernandez addressed that issue at the interval by bringing on Zirkzee. The striker offered a clearer target for the midfield and gave the Serbian defenders more to contend with.
His decisive contribution arrived in the 72nd minute. Tijjani Reijnders played the pass that released Zirkzee, who restored the Dutch lead with a composed finish. Reijnders had been central to much of the home side’s best work, combining forward passing with energy during transitions.
Hernandez also made a three-player change around the hour as Serbia began to disrupt Dutch control. Veerman, who had struggled to find penetrative passes through a congested midfield, departed in the 59th minute. Lang was also replaced after finding limited space against Serbia’s five-man defensive line, while the incoming wide player added pace and width for the final half-hour.
- Koopmeiners scored in the 31st minute to give the Netherlands the lead.
- Cvetkovic equalised four minutes later from Terzic’s delivery.
- Zirkzee came on at half-time and scored the winner in the 72nd minute.
- Reijnders provided the assist for the winning goal.
- Serbia pressed for another equaliser but could not beat the Dutch defence late on.
Defensive resilience secures the result
Bart Verbruggen made four saves and was unable to do much about Serbia’s well-executed equaliser. His passing from the back nevertheless helped the Netherlands play through the first wave of Serbian pressure.
The Dutch captain, making his 100th international appearance, kept the defensive line organised as Serbia sought space on the counterattack. He won his individual contests and ensured the side remained compact during the late pressure.
Denzel Dumfries supplied his usual running power from the right, even if his final delivery was not at its sharpest. His recovery work was particularly important when Terzic advanced for Serbia. Micky van de Ven also provided pace behind the high line, making interceptions and stepping into midfield to support possession phases.
Summerville remained a live threat with his acceleration and dribbling, although his final choices did not always match his ability to beat defenders. The late replacements included a young defender who strengthened the left side, Zechiel in midfield to help close down Lazar Samardzic and Sasa Lukic, and an 82nd-minute substitute for Reijnders who helped protect the advantage.
Group position remains tight
The victory takes the Netherlands to eight points in Nations League A Group 2, level with Greece at the top of the section. It was not a straightforward home performance, but Hernandez’s changes—most notably the decision to use Zirkzee after the interval—gave his team the edge needed to stay in touch with the group leaders.
