A card shop in Beaverton, Oregon has paused its Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments for a week after complaints from attendees about poor player hygiene, including reports that some participants were leaving an unpleasant odor around the venue.

| Store | Location | Event | Change | Reason |

| Chronos Games & Gifts | Beaverton, Oregon | Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments | Suspended for one week | Multiple complaints and negative reviews tied to hygiene issues |
Chronos Games & Gifts, an independently run store in the area, has drawn attention online for taking a firm approach to keeping the community space clean. The shop’s stance spread after it shared its decision publicly, tying the tournament break directly to feedback it received from customers.
In a message posted to its public Discord server, the store confirmed that it would suspend its Yu-Gi-Oh events for a week, pointing the finger at “stinky duellists” as the cause behind the complaints and the drop in reviews.
The shop’s statement also referenced ongoing problems, saying it had dealt with people mistreating the restrooms and that it had received multiple bad reviews connected to hygiene concerns. It added that players should follow Konami’s tournament expectations and report anyone who isn’t meeting them.
Konami’s official approach to cleanliness in tournaments is not new. Back in 2019, the publisher rolled out tournament guidelines aimed at hygiene, stating that anyone attending a tournament—beyond just the competing players—must be “clean and wear clean clothing,” with consequences if those standards are not met.
The official Yu-Gi-Oh Tournament Guide frames expectations clearly for event attendees. It says participants are expected to be clean when they arrive, warning that failing to wash or wear fresh clothes contributes to an unpleasant environment—especially since tournaments can be crowded and long days are common.
It also notes that attendees who ignore self-care to the point that it negatively affects the event may be asked to fix the issue before they can keep participating. In other words, the rules are written to address the problem as it impacts everyone in the room.

At the time, this kind of policy was widely welcomed by players, and Chronos Games & Gifts appears to be getting the same kind of support locally. Some attendees have praised the store for keeping its events free from lingering smells, crediting the management for enforcing expectations rather than letting the issue continue.
Chronos isn’t the only organization to spell out hygiene expectations for competitors. In 2025, a Nebraska Pokémon Organized Play community page posted a reminder urging players to stay clean, referencing the official Play! Pokémon Tournament Rules Handbook. That handbook includes a dedicated hygiene section that lays out requirements for attendees.
The Pokémon handbook states that individuals must maintain a socially acceptable level of hygiene during the event. It also explains that, depending on what someone is wearing or how clean they are, tournament organizers may permit a participant to adjust their personal hygiene or attire and then return to the venue.
More serious noncompliance is handled with clear consequences. If a participant refuses to follow requests from tournament staff, that refusal can be grounds for removal from both the tournament and the venue, with the participant required to surrender their badge to tournament staff.
