Fenerbahce president Yildirim has rejected Kartal’s attempt to resign after Thursday’s 1-1 Champions League draw with Roma, leaving the coach in post despite his declaration that he had stepped down for the club’s benefit.

Why the decision matters for Fenerbahce

Kartal announced after the opening league-phase fixture that he was leaving his role, saying he had chosen to depart that night. Yildirim intervened within minutes, however, and made clear that the manager had not been relieved of his duties.

The president said Kartal had been badly affected after a bottle thrown from the crowd struck him on the head during the match. Yildirim described the coach as distressed by the incident, with the immediate focus now on settling the situation around the first team.

The draw against Roma was meant to mark Fenerbahce’s long-awaited return to the Champions League proper, but the occasion was instead overshadowed by the touchline incident and the ensuing uncertainty over Kartal’s position.
