Spalletti Handed Touchline Ban After Red Card in Juventus Draw
Luciano Spalletti will serve a one-match touchline ban after he and Cagliari coach Fabio Pisacane were dismissed following Juventus’ 1-1 Serie A draw at the Unipol Domus. The Juventus manager was shown a straight red card after the final whistle, with referee Matteo Marcenaro also sending off Pisacane after an exchange during the customary handshake.
Late Juventus response earns a point in Cagliari
Juventus had to recover from an early Daniel Maldini goal despite controlling much of the contest in Sardinia. The visitors registered 70 per cent of possession and 21 attempts, but did not find their equaliser until the 81st minute, when Randal Kolo Muani headed in to level the match.
- Cagliari took the lead through an early Maldini strike.
- Juventus finished with 70 per cent possession.
- The Bianconeri produced 21 shots during the draw.
- Kolo Muani’s headed goal in the 81st minute made it 1-1.
Spalletti backed his attacking selections after the match, explaining that Nico Gonzalez had been moved closer to Kolo Muani, while Weston McKennie shifted to the left in the first half. Nick Woltemade was later introduced from the bench.
The 67-year-old said Kolo Muani is especially difficult for defenders to contain when given licence to move across the front line, with Gonzalez operating in support rather than as the central striker.
Handshake dispute brings two red cards
The match ended amid tension on the touchline. Spalletti approached Pisacane after the whistle and the discussion escalated sufficiently for Marcenaro to dismiss both coaches, triggering automatic suspensions from the technical area.
Spalletti maintained that the episode had been exaggerated. He said he had complimented Cagliari’s football while also referring to their ability to run down the clock. Pisacane challenged that description, and the argument ended with both managers being sent off.
“Nothing happened,” Spalletti said, describing the incident as a routine exchange rather than a serious confrontation.
The Juventus coach also addressed a separate flashpoint involving Cagliari defender Yerry Mina around half-time. In a pointed remark, Spalletti compared it to events from last season and suggested Mina had used the manner of an experienced, forceful player to influence the situation.
Lazio visit awaits without Spalletti
Spalletti will be absent from the Juventus bench when Lazio visit next Sunday. His focus, however, was on converting the control shown against Cagliari into more decisive results.
With his 70th birthday approaching, Spalletti said he wants to bring his coaching career to a satisfying conclusion. He expressed confidence that Juventus will win more often if they continue to perform with the same authority displayed in Sardinia.
