Wario Land Joins Nintendo Switch Online as July Game Boy Lineup Grows

Nintendo has rolled out fresh entries to its classic library, bringing more Game Boy and Game Boy Advance-era games to Nintendo Switch. The headline addition is Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, a title that’s sometimes described as a Super Mario Land follow-up—but really plays like the start of Wario’s own spotlight era.

Even though it’s technically part of the Super Mario Land line, the original Wario Land barely leans on Nintendo’s famous plumber. Instead, it frames Wario as the main attraction, carving out his “naughty rival” personality as something that can carry a full game on its own. If you’ve played later entries in the Wario Land series, you’ll recognize a lot of the DNA here: side-scrolling stages, treasure-hunting momentum, and Wario’s relentless drive to grab gold and valuable loot.

Quick facts: new Nintendo Classics arrivals

  • Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (Game Boy)
  • The Sword of Hope II (Game Boy)
  • Fortified Zone (Game Boy)
  • Dr. Mario & Puzzle League (Game Boy Advance, bundled as two puzzle games)

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 originally launched on the Game Boy in 1994. Now it’s available on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 for players who have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

Nintendo Classics also added three Game Boy games to the lineup: Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, The Sword of Hope II, and Fortified Zone. For Nintendo Switch Online members on the Expansion Pack tier, there’s an additional bundle of Game Boy Advance content that includes Dr. Mario & Puzzle League as two games in one.

Alongside the headline Wario entry, other Game Boy additions include a JRPG from Kemco described as “so-so,” The Sword of Hope 2, and Fortified Zone, which is characterized as an “okay” top-down shooter. With these additions, the focus is clearly on giving classic handheld fans a wider mix—puzzle, action, and RPG—under the Nintendo Classics umbrella.

Finally, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers who use the Expansion Pack tier can also access Dr. Mario & Puzzle League, which packages two puzzle experiences together. That “two for one” approach is one of the big selling points for players specifically interested in puzzle-heavy classics.
