Patrick Vieira's First Senegal Squad Omits Sadio Mane

Patrick Vieira has begun his Senegal tenure with an expanded 29-man squad, leaving out Sadio Mane for the forthcoming international camp after the Al-Nassr forward reported a minor physical problem. The former France midfielder, officially unveiled in Dakar as the Lions of Teranga’s new head coach, has been appointed to oversee a four-year project designed to keep Senegal competitive while laying foundations towards 2030.

What changed for Senegal

Vieira, 50, was born in Dakar and moved to France when he was eight. He described the role as a return to his roots, pointing to his family’s connection with the Senegalese capital and saying the decision went beyond another managerial move in his career.

Federation president Abdoulaye Fall said the appointment was essential for the national side. Vieira said his choice to accept the position was motivated by personal feeling rather than money, while promising a full commitment to the expectations around the team.

The most notable absence from the first squad is Mane. Vieira explained that he had spoken directly with the forward and expects him to return for the following camp once the issue has cleared.

Rather than remake the group entirely, Vieira intends to retain the progress already made by Senegal while introducing players for the new cycle. The squad includes four goalkeepers following Edouard Mendy’s international retirement.

Monza goalkeeper Ngagne Demba Thiam has received his first senior call-up.
AS Saint-Etienne’s Mamour Ndiaye is also included for the first time.
Seven players are in line for senior debuts, among them Monaco centre-back Sadibou Sane, Auxerre full-back Lamine Sy and FC Metz forward Pape Moussa Fall.

Competition context

Senegal are entering the opening phase of qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with Vieira’s initial selections providing an early indication of how he plans to balance established internationals and new options.

The manager has stressed that his task is to build from the platform already in place, not discard it. The first window will nevertheless test his ability to introduce his ideas quickly, particularly with Mane unavailable.

The 29-player group also gives Vieira the chance to assess depth in key areas, including the goalkeeper position after Mendy’s departure from international football. The seven newcomers offer potential additions for a programme that is intended to run through the next four years.
