Valve Steam Machine Gets CNC Water-Cooling Mod, Cuts APU Temps by 20-30°C
A Steam Machine built by Valve is getting an unusual cooling makeover online: a YouTuber has replaced its standard thermal setup with a custom CNC-machined water block feeding an external radiator, claiming a temperature drop of 20 to 30 degrees Celsius at the APU. While the experiment is already stirring interest among PC modders, the practical gains for most players may be limited unless the console-scale PC is actually hitting its thermal ceiling.
Custom water-cooling for Valve’s Steam Machine APU
The project is credited to YouTuber Stefan Warecka, who shared the build on Reddit alongside a short video showing the retrofit. Warecka’s Steam Machine uses a custom, self-machined cooling block mounted directly to the Phoenix-2 APU. Tubing then routes out of the chassis to an external radiator with a fan, mounted on the back of the cube-style case.
Visually, the loop stands out: the coolant is neon pink, giving the small, living-room-sized PC a color scheme more reminiscent of a lab experiment than a typical console-like build. Warecka also opened the packaging in the video using an angle grinder, underscoring the highly hands-on nature of the fabrication work.
Claimed temperature improvement—and what’s missing
Warecka says the water-cooling setup brings the APU down by roughly 20 to 30 °C compared to the stock arrangement. However, the post and video do not provide the key details that would let viewers evaluate the result in a repeatable way, such as the specific workload used for the measurement or the exact method of collecting temperature data.
There’s also an important context point for Steam Machine owners: Valve’s system behavior includes throttling when CPU and GPU reach 100 °C, and it can shut the device down if temperatures rise beyond that point. A red LED status light on the front reportedly used to illuminate earlier than expected, and a BIOS update is said to address that behavior.
In other words, better cooling tends to matter most when performance is constrained by hitting temperature limits—situations where clock speeds and power draw are being held back to prevent overheating. As for whether this water loop improves the experience in day-to-day gaming, the available footage does not include comprehensive benchmark charts or frametime graphs.
First “water-cooled Steam Machine” claim disputed by history
Warecka’s “world premiere” framing is limited. Water-cooled Steam Machine builds existed earlier than Valve’s own cube, as shown by CES reports from 2014. At that time, Digital Storm promoted the Bolt II as the first liquid-cooled Steam Machine, featuring a closed-loop system, a 240 mm radiator, and its own controller board labeled HydroLux. The Bolt II was listed starting at 1,899 US dollars.
Valve’s first Steam Machine era ultimately involved partner-built systems, and that generation was discontinued in 2018. For the 2026 successor that’s expected to arrive later, Warecka’s cooling retrofit is currently being positioned as the first of its kind—though that “first” only applies within the narrow frame of Valve’s own hardware.
Next target: cooling the Steam Machine VRM
Warecka says the next improvement will focus on the motherboard’s voltage regulation circuitry. He calls the voltage converters the actual weak point, arguing that the MOSFET components are physically small and operate close to their thermal design limits. According to his explanation, that constraint also makes access for additional cooling more difficult.
He has indicated a full video for the next stage will be posted to his YouTube channel, and a teardown of the Steam Machine used to prepare the project is already available there.
Risk for anyone attempting a similar build in Germany
For players and hobbyists planning a similar mod at home, the legal risk is a major consideration. In Germany, the guidance shared with the project notes that damage caused by the modder would not create claims against the seller or against Valve.
The two-year statutory warranty under the German Civil Code applies to defects that were present at the time of handover. A hole in the chassis or a CNC-machined block mounted on the APU would not qualify as such a defect under that framework. Cost is another deterrent: the Steam Machine originally launched at prices ranging from 1,039 to 1,428 euros depending on configuration.
