Trent Alexander-Arnold Gives No Sign of Leaving Real Madrid Despite Speculation
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s first season at Real Madrid has placed his long-term future under scrutiny, but the 27-year-old has given no sign that he is preparing to leave the Spanish club. His contract runs until 2031 after Real Madrid paid a small fee to complete his move from Liverpool before he became a free agent.
What changed for the club
Alexander-Arnold ended a long association with Liverpool to take on a new challenge in Spain, joining England team-mate Jude Bellingham at Real Madrid. The move brought an emotional end to his time with his boyhood club, where he had collected two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Community Shield.
He also won the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2020 and represented England at major international tournaments before beginning his Madrid spell.
Real Madrid’s right-sided options have become more competitive, with Alexander-Arnold facing a challenge for selection from Denzel Dumfries. He is also working under José Mourinho, the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham manager.
Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock believes Alexander-Arnold has the technical profile to remain effective well into his career, including the possibility of eventually moving into midfield.
“He does not need to depend on speed in the way some players do,” Warnock said. “His quality in possession and his passing range are exceptional. You could see him becoming a central midfielder later in his career.”
Warnock said the defender appears settled in Madrid despite recognising that a place in the side must be earned. “He knows it will be hard at Real Madrid, but he will have confidence in himself. He has always had people questioning him, despite the level he has reached.”
Competition context
Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool having achieved virtually every major domestic and European honour available during his time at Anfield. His departure, close to the conclusion of his Liverpool contract, created the possibility of a free transfer before Real Madrid intervened to secure an earlier release.
The prospect of a return to English football has been discussed, although there is no suggestion that such a move is imminent.

“He is an outstanding footballer, but his earnings in Madrid are enormous after arriving without a transfer fee,” Murphy said. “I expect him to stay for at least another season, assess his position, and then decide what comes next.”
Murphy did not rule out a Premier League comeback later in Alexander-Arnold’s career, noting that English clubs have the financial strength to attract elite players. However, he does not expect that outcome in the immediate future.
What is scheduled next
No transfer decision or return to Liverpool is currently scheduled. Alexander-Arnold has just under five years remaining on his Real Madrid agreement, and the terms are set to keep him at the club through 2031.
His immediate task is to establish himself in Real Madrid’s squad amid competition for places. Any future move back to England, a Liverpool reunion or another spell abroad remains a longer-term question rather than an active plan.
