Liverpool Launch Iraola Era With Thrilling 4-3 Villarreal Comeback
Liverpool began the Iraola era with a dramatic 4-3 Champions League win over Villarreal on Tuesday, recovering from two early concessions to complete an emphatic European turnaround at Anfield.
Why the result matters for Liverpool
| Match detail | Result |
|---|---|
| Competition | Champions League |
| Match | Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal |
| Liverpool scorers | Alexis Mac Allister 2, Ronald Araujo, Florian Wirtz |
| Villarreal late scorer | Tani Oluwaseyi |
| Key creator | Rio Ngumoha, 2 assists |
The victory offered an immediate indication of the response Iraola has demanded after taking charge. Liverpool had endured a sharp decline in the previous campaign, finishing fifth after Arne Slot’s first season had brought the Premier League title.
Mac Allister, whose header began the comeback, said the squad had been below its standards last year and accepted personal responsibility for his own performances. The Argentina midfielder said there had been an issue within the group, but believes the new head coach has altered the atmosphere.
Villarreal’s early two-goal advantage placed Liverpool under significant pressure, yet Mac Allister reduced the deficit before Araujo levelled. Mac Allister then scored again, with Wirtz adding what proved to be the decisive fourth goal. Oluwaseyi’s late strike for the Spanish visitors ensured a tense finish but did not prevent Liverpool taking the win.
A more direct defensive approach
Mac Allister described a clear change in Liverpool’s defensive structure under Iraola. He said the side now uses more man-to-man marking, rather than the zonal approach employed during Slot’s spell.
While stressing that he did not want to draw excessive comparisons between managers, the 25-year-old said he feels more comfortable in the current setup. He explained that individual assignments can make decisions simpler, even if they demand more running.
“We are taking more responsibility,” Mac Allister said. “It is easier in some ways: you think less, but perhaps you have to run more. That is where the game is going.”
He noted that zonal defending remains effective with Argentina, but said Liverpool’s current one-versus-one system is working for the group.
Ngumoha earns Mac Allister’s praise
Mac Allister also singled out 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha after the teenager supplied two decisive assists in the comeback. The midfielder said Ngumoha’s contribution should not be overlooked simply because he did not score.
“Rio was outstanding and made the difference,” Mac Allister said. “Everybody can see his quality, but his work without the ball was important too.”
Mac Allister added that he has encouraged Ngumoha to deliver low crosses, highlighting the youngster’s role in the move for Liverpool’s second goal.
The Argentine’s own opener came from a header, despite his modest stature. He said arriving at the near post is a familiar strength, recalling a similar World Cup goal and joking that his father, who is of a comparable height, was also strong in the air.
Liverpool will now seek to carry the resilience shown against Villarreal into their domestic programme, with Iraola aiming to turn a major Champions League recovery into sustained form across the season.
