PSG confirm Kvaratskhelia ACL injury after Barcelona win

Paris Saint-Germain will be without Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for an extended period after confirming that the Georgia winger ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee against Barcelona.

The 25-year-old was injured during Tuesday night’s 4-2 Champions League win at the Parc des Princes and is due to have surgery in the coming days. PSG did not provide a projected return date.

Quick facts

  • Kvaratskhelia suffered a ruptured right ACL against Barcelona on Tuesday.
  • The injury came early in the second half of PSG’s 4-2 Champions League victory.
  • He will undergo an operation in the coming days.
  • Ousmane Dembele and Marquinhos also sustained thigh injuries in the match.
  • Both Dembele and Marquinhos will receive treatment for the next few weeks.

Kvaratskhelia went down after a challenge involving Barcelona’s Xavi Espart shortly after the interval. He held his right knee immediately and required treatment on the pitch before being assisted from the field.

The winger was unable to bear weight on the leg as he left the pitch, and Wednesday’s medical update confirmed the seriousness of the damage. A rehabilitation programme will begin after his operation.

ACL injuries ordinarily involve a long recovery, leaving PSG without a player who had become an important part of their attacking unit. The club face the prospect of covering his absence across domestic competition and the Champions League.

Dembele also left the Barcelona match with a problem to his left thigh. PSG said the forward will remain under treatment for the coming weeks.

Captain Marquinhos sustained an injury to his right thigh and will likewise undergo treatment over the next few weeks. The Brazilian defender’s absence, alongside Dembele’s and Kvaratskhelia’s, adds to the demands on PSG’s squad in both defence and attack.
