Tanjiro Kamado’s Most Powerful Demon Slayer Forms, Ranked
Tanjiro Kamado kicks off his demon-hunting life as a fragile orphan driven by pure rage and a need for revenge in Demon Slayer. Even without a long history of sword practice, he still finds a way to rise fast—thanks in large part to the guidance of Urokodaki Sakonji—until his most dominant techniques can place him among the series’ elite fighters in a surprisingly short span of time.
The anime is filled with terrifying demons, but only a select few are truly peak threats—characters whose presence alone raises the stakes for every encounter.
As Tanjiro gets closer to his last confrontation with the demon king, Muzan Kibutsuji, he’ll need to lean on the most powerful abilities he’s developed across his career. Armed with a Nichirin Blade and fully mastering both Water Breathing and Sun Breathing, Tanjiro is set to put his strongest forms through their ultimate stress test.
7 Tanjiro’s Orphaned Form Is a Natural Survivor
For years, Tanjiro has effectively been the man of the house in the Kamado household. That constant responsibility has hardened his body in ways that don’t come from dojo training—building stamina, endurance, and a kind of practical toughness that never stops. His daily life isn’t glamorous: he climbs the mountain, chops wood, looks after his siblings, and does whatever he can to support villagers who need help.
Even if his “training” wasn’t built around sword techniques, his orphaned survival routine still prepares him for demon-slayer work in crucial ways. It gives him the strength to carry Nezuko on his back, the ability to endure her demonic impulses and attacks, and the presence of mind to nearly outmaneuver the Water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka, using nothing but a chopping ax. In hindsight, the chores and hardships from Mount Kumotori function as the perfect foundation for his later career as a hunter.

6 Long-Haired Tanjiro Endured Urokodaki’s Harsh Training
To this day, many Demon Slayer fans miss the sight of Tanjiro with long hair. He only let it grow during his intense training under the former Water Hashira, Sakonji Urokodaki, on Mount Sagiri—where he spent months studying Water Breathing and learning its techniques.
This was Tanjiro’s first real introduction to formal sword instruction, and the grind reshaped him from an ordinary charcoal seller into a genuine candidate for the demon slayer program. Mount Sagiri made everything harder than it needed to be, with its high elevation, thin air, and unforgiving terrain, but the long-haired Tanjiro kept pushing. Eventually, he earned Urokodaki’s belief that he was prepared for the final selection exam.
5 Tanjiro’s Dormant Demon Slayer Mark Form Was Already So Powerful
Unlike Yoriichi, Tanjiro wasn’t born with a demon slayer mark. The scar on his forehead initially came from a boiling accident, but it later changed and developed through his battles—especially during the Entertainment District Arc when he fought and overcame an Upper Rank Six.
Even before the mark truly awakened, Tanjiro was already overpowering demons alongside Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke. From defeating the Temple Demon, Hand Demon, and Swamp Demon to decapitating the Spider Demon Mother, Tanjiro kept finishing these threats down to the last blow—despite doing it with a dormant demon slayer mark.
4 Tanjiro’s Awakened Demon Slayer Mark Form Defeated Upper Moons
The demon slayer mark doesn’t just make Tanjiro better in one area—it boosts his speed, strength, senses, durability, and overall striking power. In practical terms, it amplifies his combat effectiveness multiple times compared to his normal baseline, letting him outlast heavily ranked demons and eventually force victories.
With the demon slayer mark awakened, Tanjiro has managed to defeat Gyutaro, Hantengu, and even Akaza, though those fights also depended on support from friends and the Hashira. Without the mark, Tanjiro wouldn’t have been able to land the finishing blows on these dangerous opponents—demons who bring far more raw strength and stamina than unmarked hunters can comfortably handle.
Muzan remains the final antagonist of Demon Slayer, but Infinity Castle is where an even more dangerous enemy begins to surface.
3 Tanjiro’s Selfless State Countered Akaza’s Compass Needle
The battles inside Infinity Castle are among the harshest and least forgiving in Demon Slayer’s history, forcing Tanjiro to depend on unusual techniques just to survive. Through memories shared with his father, Tanjiro eventually unlocks the Selfless State.
Against Akaza, Tanjiro uses the Selfless State to access the Transparent World. In that mode, he dampens his fighting presence—reducing his fighting spirit, killing intent, and animosity toward Akaza. He reaches a calm, clear mental condition with no distractions pulling him off course. That shift ultimately throws Akaza off balance, leading to the unexpected outcome: Tanjiro defeats him.
2 13th Form Tanjiro Used All 12 Sun Breathing Forms
Sun Breathing consists of 13 distinct forms created by the legendary swordsman Yoriichi Tsugikuni. These techniques are passed to Tanjiro, making him the exclusive user of Sun Breathing during the Taisho era. In the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, Tanjiro ultimately calls upon the 13th form of Sun Breathing.

The 13th form lets Tanjiro link together all 12 Sun Breathing forms and unleash them all at once, aiming to destroy Muzan’s 12 vital organs simultaneously. However, the injuries Tanjiro suffers during the Muzan fight prevent him from performing the sequence exactly like Yoriichi could. Instead, he has to execute each form one after another. Even if his version isn’t as clean or instantaneous, it still becomes the crucial way to exploit Muzan’s weaknesses.
1 Demon King Tanjiro Surpassed Muzan Kibutsuji
Demon King Tanjiro is the strongest figure in Demon Slayer, overpowering Muzan in every meaningful way—even though he doesn’t get much screen time in the final arc. He’s Tanjiro transformed into a demon form after Muzan’s remaining blood is forced into him in a desperate bid to turn the tide.
In this corrupted state, Demon King Tanjiro sits far above the power ceiling of every other character in the series. He has access to all 13 Sun Breathing forms, along with his blood demon art and an immediate resistance to the Sun. Without Tamayo’s anti-demon drug and Tanjiro’s stubborn resolve, Demon King Tanjiro likely would have completed Muzan’s original objective.
