Supamonks Enters Liquidation Despite Absolum’s Major Success

Supamonks—the studio credited with helping shape Absolum’s standout, dark-fantasy-inspired art direction—has reportedly entered court-ordered liquidation, even though the beat ’em up itself was described as a major success for Dotemu.

2025 has been packed with great releases, but Absolum was one of the highlights for many players, including me. I called it one of the best brawlers in a while, especially because it didn’t just revisit familiar genre beats—it pushed the style forward. A big reason it stood out was its visual identity: the game blends dark fantasy atmosphere with an easygoing Saturday morning cartoon energy, making every scene feel distinctive without losing its punchy personality.

Absolum’s development was handled across three different teams: Dotemu, Guard Crush Games, and Supamonks. Supamonks’ specific role was bringing the game’s unique art style to life. Unfortunately, that praise and the game’s strong performance don’t appear to have been enough to prevent Supamonks from shutting down abruptly.

Absolum’s Art Team Studio Supamonks Moves Into Court-Ordered Liquidation

The Impact on the Game and Its Planned Animated Adaptation Isn’t Clear

On June 24, GameKult reported that Supamonks had “unexpectedly” entered liquidation a few weeks earlier. Liquidation is what happens when a company runs out of money; after that, the business is effectively shut down and its assets are sold off to settle matters.

Absolum art director Maxime Mary also recently discussed the craft behind the game, offering an exclusive look at how the four heroes were created and sharing details about his work on the project.

Multiple reports tied the liquidation decision to the Créteil Commercial Court. It’s still unclear what pushed Supamonks into a financial situation severe enough to trigger liquidation, but it’s a particularly rough turn given how much quality work the team contributed—and how much the studio seemed positioned to keep building after Absolum.

I also had the chance to speak with Maxime Mary and see firsthand how much care and intention he brought to constructing the world of Talamh. It’s hard not to feel for him and everyone else impacted by the closure.

No official announcements have been made about Absolum’s post-launch content after its first major update, though it would have been reasonable to expect more given its strong sales and reception. Last year, it was also confirmed that an animated series was in development. Dotemu CEO Cyrille Imbert described Supamonks as the “ideal partner” for the ambitious project.
