Stupid Never Dies is set in an otherworldly dungeon overrun by monsters, where Davy—described as an “insignificant zombie”—survives in the base of a monstrous society. After the aftermath of a “Great War,” humanity is said to be on the brink of extinction, and the world’s balance is anything but hopeful.
At the center of Davy’s motivation is a human girl, Julia, who is found frozen inside a freezer—dead, until Davy decides she isn’t finished. In a story that mixes romance with survival horror absurdity, Davy falls “at first sight” and sets a goal that sounds equal parts tender and doomed: revive Julia and then “invite her out.”
Love story meets zombie power theft
The trailer’s boss showcase ties into the game’s core mechanic: a strange miasma in the dungeon grants Davy powerful abilities that turn him from a nobody into a combat threat. The main system is “zombie action,” where zombies devour enemies and, by consuming an enemy’s core, steal their abilities—sometimes changing Davy’s look as well.
Style variety is a major part of that progression. Players can unlock 10 additional zombie styles beyond the default, bringing the total to 11 unique styles to master. The pitch is straightforward: dominate each style and use the stolen capabilities to push through monsters and bosses.
Davy also isn’t heading into the dungeon alone. The game’s setup includes an eccentric figure, Dr. Frank, who dreams of restoring humanity, plus a group of mysterious but supportive allies. The premise frames Davy as a newly empowered underdog—someone previously mocked by both monsters and humans—finally rising in the fog of the dungeon with a purpose tied directly to Julia.
Where the story starts
The narrative backstory explains that during the Great War, a university student hid in a shopping center and died inside a freezer. Davy, wandering that shopping center as a zombie, finds her frozen in time and becomes captivated immediately—setting the emotional stakes for everything that follows.
Another key figure is a self-proclaimed “supreme intellect of humanity,” who ignores public opinion as long as it advances their research. That character is said to provoke and push Davy toward action, adding a layer of manipulation to the already bizarre romance of a zombie trying to fix the world.
Stupid Never Dies launches on PS5 and PC (via Steam) on October 21. Until then, the newly revealed Wyvern fight gives a preview of the game’s monster-slaying pace—and the kind of twisted, stylish power-hunting Davy will be doing when he finally tries to turn frozen love into something alive.
