Salah Praised by Van Dijk for Helping Ngumoha Shine in Liverpool Comeback
Rio Ngumoha’s two assists helped Liverpool overturn a two-goal deficit against Villarreal at Anfield on Tuesday, with captain Virgil van Dijk highlighting Mohamed Salah’s influence on the teenager’s rapid adjustment to a role on the right wing.
What changed for Liverpool
Liverpool recovered to win 4-2 after Villarreal had established an early 2-0 lead. Ngumoha, more commonly used from the left, was a persistent attacking outlet on the opposite flank and supplied two assists in the comeback.
Van Dijk said the 19-year-old has benefited from guidance throughout the senior group, naming Cody Gakpo among those who have supported younger, less experienced players. He reserved particular praise for the time Ngumoha spent working alongside Salah last season.
In Van Dijk’s view, Salah’s experience as one of Liverpool’s leading wide players gave Ngumoha a valuable opportunity to absorb information and apply it in matches. The captain believes the youngster has already demonstrated his ability this season, while insisting there is a higher level still to reach.
Van Dijk described Ngumoha as capable of producing explosive moments and said Villarreal’s defender struggled to contain him during the match.
Competition context
The victory came after a difficult opening for Liverpool in their Champions League tie. Van Dijk made an uncharacteristic mistake which allowed Georges Mikautadze to put Villarreal ahead, before further loose defending enabled Sergi Cardona to extend the visitors’ advantage.
Liverpool responded through Alexis Mac Allister, Ronald Araújo and Florian Wirtz as they turned the contest around and secured the three points.
- Villarreal led 2-0 at Anfield through Georges Mikautadze and Sergi Cardona.
- Ngumoha contributed two assists from the right side of Liverpool’s attack.
- Alexis Mac Allister, Ronald Araújo and Florian Wirtz were among Liverpool’s comeback scorers.
Van Dijk accepted responsibility for his part in Liverpool’s poor start, calling it a bad individual performance. He said that recovering from an early defensive error can be especially difficult for a defender, but stressed that the team’s response mattered more than his own display.
The Netherlands international added that such errors have been rare during his Liverpool career and was relieved that the side’s collective recovery delivered a win.
What is scheduled next
No subsequent Liverpool fixture was detailed, but the immediate task is to build on the three points while maintaining the development of Ngumoha within the first-team group.
For Van Dijk, the Villarreal result also underlined the importance of Liverpool’s senior players helping younger teammates settle into new responsibilities, particularly as Ngumoha continues to operate outside his usual left-wing position.
