Rumor: GTA 6 Could Offer a 60 FPS Mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X
With GTA 6 now sitting in the pre-order spotlight, official information about the game is still pretty limited beyond what we’ve seen so far—two trailers and a small set of screenshots. That scarcity is leaving plenty of room for leaks and educated guesswork, and the newest claim is one that could matter a lot to players: a 60 FPS option on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
Release-window and platform rumor: 60 FPS on PS5 + Series X
The talk centers on GTA 6 launching on consoles this year, and whether the “base” hardware can hit higher framerates consistently. The rumor specifically points to an option for 60 frames per second on both PS5 and Xbox Series X, potentially alongside a 30 FPS alternative.
GTA 6 could include a 60 FPS mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X
Because GTA 6 is only launching on consoles this year, there’s understandable concern that the current-gen base systems—hardware that’s already a few generations old by now—may struggle with a project described as a major technical undertaking from Rockstar.
That said, a report from Borys Niespielak on the Rock and Borys podcast claims the game could let players choose between two performance targets. The idea is that GTA 6 would offer a 30 FPS “quality” mode, while also providing a 60 FPS “performance” mode—both potentially available even on the original versions of PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Timing is also part of the speculation. These two different framerate modes could arrive at launch, or they might be introduced later via a post-release update, depending on how much pressure develops during crunch time ahead of the game’s November launch.
The claim is reportedly tied to a “single source” described as “very reliable” and “close to Rockstar.” Even so, it’s still smart to treat the information cautiously until something is confirmed closer to launch—especially since it’s not coming from a random forum post, but it still isn’t official at this stage either.
If this pans out, it would be a big win for many players. A lot of gamers today tend to prioritize smoother gameplay over small visual upgrades like slightly improved character detail or denser shadow effects. One expectation in the community is that higher framerate options would be reserved for upgraded hardware such as the PS5 Pro, so the suggestion that the same options could extend to the original PS5 and Series X would be a pleasant surprise.
The one potential downside in this rumor is for Xbox Series S owners. The implication is that Series S would likely aim for 30 FPS, with no guarantee that a 60 FPS mode would be achievable on that model. Since Series S is the least powerful of the current Xbox lineup, that limitation is plausible even if Microsoft and partners push hard on optimization.
Niespielak also suggests that Rockstar is working with Microsoft in an attempt to make higher framerates possible on Series S, though the report admits that outcome seems unlikely in practice.
As launch approaches, the key question is whether we’ll get clearer confirmation—possibly around the third trailer, where many players expect more direct gameplay footage and performance context.
