Project Zomboid Build 42 Hits Full Release, Breaks Steam Concurrency Record

While many survival games chase the spotlight with new releases, Project Zomboid has been doing something rarer: pulling a huge crowd back to a major update. After Build 42 finally left the open beta stage last week, the game shattered its own Steam activity record, drawing more than 121,000 concurrent players over a weekend.

Build 42 leaves open beta—and brings players flooding back

The Indie Stone released Build 42 from open beta testing last week. That open testing had been running since December 2024, meaning the community has been waiting a long time for this next step in the survival sandbox.

In its own pitch for the update, the studio framed Build 42 as the biggest change in Project Zomboid’s history, centered on a reworked game world plus a broad set of additions and improvements. The claimed focus areas included:

  • a rebuilt world for the game
  • new content added to the survival experience
  • crafting system improvements
  • targeting changes
  • base-building expansion and upgrades
  • new gameplay modes

Steam concurrency nearly doubles the previous record

Those changes translated directly into player numbers. Project Zomboid reportedly broke its own peak by almost a factor of two, reaching 121,603 concurrent users on Steam during the weekend.

The prior all-time high stood at 65,505 players at once. With that result, the game also landed among Valve’s platform’s most popular titles, placing within the top 20.

Even outside the record weekend, the game has been holding a strong baseline for years. During the first half of 2026, it was reportedly uncommon for the game to dip below 40,000 concurrent players at peak—numbers comparable to other established live-service multiplayer releases such as Helldivers 2, Final Fantasy XIV Online, and R.E.P.O.

Price increase doesn’t stop the bestseller push

The update’s momentum also arrived alongside a notable pricing change. The game’s price increased from 73.99 zł to 104.99 zł.

Despite the jump, Project Zomboid climbed into Steam’s best-seller chart, where it was listed at position 75 at the time of reporting. The outcome suggests the update’s draw was strong enough to offset the higher cost.

Player reaction has been largely positive, with many users praising Build 42—an update they had been waiting on for an extended period.

Designer response hints Build 43 won’t be immediate

Even with the weekend record, the conversation quickly moved toward what comes next. In response to a comment suggesting the new Project Zomboid peak was a sign the next update should arrive quickly, Christian Allen (design director) responded with a short paraphrase: “Yes, a sign to complete B43.”

The wording reportedly avoided any promise of speed, implying the studio will not rush the next major step and that Build 43 likely won’t reach players soon.
