Portugal Minister Backs Ronaldo After Norway Snub Sparks Walkout
Portugal’s dispute with Cristiano Ronaldo has widened beyond the national team camp after Minister Castro Almeida stressed the forward’s importance to the country’s international profile. Ronaldo, 41, left the squad after being left unused against Norway, and his absence has prompted a visible reaction from supporters online and in Lisbon.
What changed for Portugal
Ronaldo departed the Portugal camp on Wednesday following talks with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca. The decision came after he did not take the field in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Norway, despite warming up for much of the second half.
He then missed the following training session before confirming that he would leave the group. Ronaldo has since returned to Saudi Arabia and has not yet given a full account of the disagreement, although he has indicated that he will explain the circumstances to Portugal supporters “in due course” and tell them the truth.
Castro Almeida said the country should seek to preserve Ronaldo’s connection with the national side, even while declining to comment on the sporting issues involving coach Jorge Jesus. The minister described the former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward as “Portugal’s best-known company”, citing his role in promoting the country worldwide.
Competition context
Portugal continued its current international window without its captain and defeated Denmark 4-2. The result followed the victory over Norway, but it has not prevented the focus from remaining on Ronaldo’s exit and the tension around the squad.
The federation’s Instagram account reportedly lost more than 1.5 million followers within 48 hours of Ronaldo leaving the camp. Its following fell from about 25 million to approximately 23.5 million as supporters reacted to the situation.
- Billboards close to the federation headquarters in Oeiras carried messages backing Ronaldo as Portugal’s captain.
- Some of the displays also criticised Jesus, saying the coach was not equal to the role.
- Castro Almeida said Ronaldo remains a national asset whose value extends beyond football results.
The minister said Ronaldo has a major influence on the Portugal brand and argued that his standing makes him a significant figure for the country, irrespective of the current disagreement within the football set-up.
What is scheduled next
Portugal’s immediate on-field task is to move forward after the 4-2 Denmark win, with Ronaldo’s availability for the next national-team gathering still unresolved.
The striker has promised further clarification rather than announcing a final position on his international future. Until he speaks in detail, Portugal and Jesus face continued scrutiny over whether the captain can return to the squad following his abrupt departure.
