PlayStation Physical Disc Backlash Hits 120,000 Signatures in Petition

It’s been several days since PlayStation announced it would stop producing physical video game discs in 2028, yet the backlash hasn’t really cooled off. The original announcement continues to get Community Noted in repeated waves, even after posts are removed, while the company’s social channels have been inactive for days.

Players are now trying to push back in every way they can, hoping to add enough public pressure to reverse the decision. Petitions have naturally become a major part of that effort, and a number of them have appeared since the news broke last week. Among the submissions, one in particular has been gaining traction quickly.

PlayStation Is Facing Heat From a Growing Petition

The initiative, titled “Don’t Kill the Disc,” has been accumulating signatures at a strong pace. The petition’s author, Jade Pearce, argues that buyers may eventually lose access to games they’ve purchased digitally. As supporting context, Pearce points to Sony’s recent removal of hundreds of movies from users’ accounts and says that relying on a “code in a box” isn’t a fair replacement for owning a disc-based product.

They also claim the move could cost jobs, since phasing out physical media would ripple through small businesses worldwide that depend on that ecosystem. Pearce wraps up the push with a message aimed at separating the debate from “anti-digital” sentiment: “We are not against digital. We are against digital being the only option.”

The idea of a purchase limit has existed for some time, though it’s likely sales activity has risen as people rush to buy before any changes take effect.

That framing seems to have landed with a broad slice of the gaming community. Only a few days after the petition went live, it reached 40,000 signatures. Now, the page sits at 125,000 supporters, and the count is climbing quickly hour by hour. It’s a determined effort, but whether it can actually move the needle is uncertain—Sony has appeared to be leaning even harder into its position lately.

In an ideal scenario, sustained pressure could lead to a reversal. Sony has said it can still produce physical discs after 2028, and it has assured other publishers that it can manufacture discs for games released before January 2028. In other words, the company isn’t claiming physical production is impossible—it’s signaling a shift in what happens next. We’ll have to see how things play out, but for now, it’s worth remembering that change may not come quickly.
