Mass Effect 2 Guide: Best Times for Hub Shopping and Side Quests

This part of the Mass Effect 2 wiki guide lays out when you should tackle shopping stops and side activities across the game’s main hub worlds: Omega, the Citadel, Illium, and Tuchanka. Because these errands don’t all unlock at the same time, the guide organizes each location by the point in your campaign when it makes the most sense to go.

Key takeaways

  • Citadel shopping is scheduled for right after you obtain the Normandy SR-2 at the very beginning of the game.
  • Omega shopping is handled immediately after the Citadel route, also tied to the moment you first get the Normandy SR-2.
  • The guide delays Afterlife side quests until after you complete Samara – Ardat-Yakshi and clear content on Illium and Tuchanka.
  • Illium’s shopping and side quests are recommended as soon as the planet becomes available through Horizon.
  • Tuchanka shopping and side quests are recommended right after finishing all of Illium’s main missions.

Checklists

This section of the Mass Effect 2 guide focuses on the shopping locations and side quests you can run through in each of the four hub areas. The order you’ll encounter these activities varies depending on where you are in the story, so the guide includes timing notes to clarify when each page expects you to be in the game.

The Citadel – The Council and Shopping

For the Citadel, shopping is done right at the start of the campaign—immediately after you acquire the Normandy SR-2. During this window, you’ll be able to visit a set of key shops and services: Citadel Souvenirs, Zakera Cafe, Rodam Expeditions, Sirta Foundation, and Saronis Applications.

The route also includes visiting Anderson and Udina while you’re on the Citadel, plus completing the side quests Krogan Sushi and Crime in Progress. Finally, you’ll pick up what you need for the Special Ingredients and Serrice Ice Brandy side quests.

Omega Shopping

Omega shopping comes right after your Citadel shopping run. In practice, that means it happens as soon as you obtain the Normandy SR-2 at the beginning of the game. While you’re there, you’ll check out the Omega Market, Kenn’s Salvage, and Harrot’s Emporium, and you’ll also take on the Struggling Quarian side quest.

The guide also draws a clear boundary: you do not do anything in Afterlife during this phase, and you also don’t tackle Packages for Ish yet. Those come later.

Afterlife Side Quests

Afterlife side quests are intentionally much later than the Omega shopping checklist. You return to this area after finishing Samara – Ardat-Yakshi, and after you’ve completed everything available on Illium and Tuchanka.

At that point, the guide has you clean up the remaining side quests around Afterlife, including Packages for Ish, The Patriarch, Batarian Bartender, and Archangel: Datapad Recovered.

Illium – Shopping and Side Quests

For Illium, the guide has you do shopping and side quests immediately after unlocking the planet by completing Horizon. During this stretch, you’ll visit Serrice Technology, Gateway Personal Defense, Memories of Illium, and Baria Frontiers Stores.

While working through Illium’s content, you’ll also complete multiple side quests: Gianna Parasini, A Troublemaker, Indentured Service, Blue Rose of Illium, and Medical Scans. In addition, you’ll take on the Systems Hacking and The Observer side quests tied to the local Asari information broker.

Tuchanka – Shopping and Side Quests

The Tuchanka checklist is set up to run immediately after you wrap up all of Illium’s main missions. From there, you’ll visit Ratch’s Wares and Fortack’s Database, and you’ll complete the Killing Pyjaks side quest.
