Lyon made contact with the former France forward about a possible Ligue 1 comeback, with the club assessing whether its academy product could return to lead the attack. Benzema left Real Madrid in 2023 and has since combined his football career with a major commercial role connected to Saudi Arabia’s sporting programme.
That agreement, which is due to remain in place through 2030, ultimately made a move to France impractical. The contract includes ambassadorial, image-rights and event commitments tied to promotion of the Saudi Pro League and the country’s wider sporting ambitions. The Public Investment Fund’s requirements for its high-profile football figures meant that the travel and appearance demands could not be readily combined with a full Ligue 1 season.
Benzema’s representatives considered whether both commitments could be accommodated, but no workable arrangement emerged. The 38-year-old had previously indicated that any Lyon reunion would need to protect the memory of his first spell at the club, saying it was a sensitive subject because he had left behind such a strong image. He did not rule out a return, but suggested that some departures are best left untouched.
A changing attacking picture in Saudi Arabia
The separation from his Saudi side followed reported tension with head coach Simone Inzaghi, who wanted a younger and more mobile focal point in his forward line. The club then strengthened decisively by bringing in England international Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa, a signing that reduced Benzema’s prospects of retaining a leading role.
For Lyon, the collapse of the potential deal removes the prospect of reuniting with one of the club’s most recognisable former players. Beyond his value on the pitch, Benzema would have brought substantial profile and commercial interest to his hometown side.
What remains unresolved
It is not yet clear whether Benzema will seek another playing contract or bring his professional career to an end. His continuing ambassadorial obligations are expected to remain central, while restrictions around those duties could limit any opportunity to join a club outside Saudi Arabia.
