Hello Kitty Island Adventure: How to Complete Taiyaki Trials and Unlock Taiyaki
“Taiyaki Trials” is a Quest in the City Town region of Hello Kitty Island Adventure that adds a new treat to your day—Taiyaki, a fish-shaped pastry inspired by Japan. Once the Quest is finished, Taiyaki becomes a purchasable menu item at the Imagination Cafe, where players can order it as a customer.
What You Need Before “Taiyaki Trials”
To begin “Taiyaki Trials”, you have to clear several prerequisites first:
- Complete “A Whole New Menu”, which is what opens up the Imagination Cafe.
- Complete “Above and Below”, which grants access to the City Town Sewers.
- Unlock the Fish Derby mechanic. This involves finishing a prerequisite Quest chain that ends with “Fish Derby Fun.”
After you’ve finished “Fish Derby Fun” and unlocked the Fish Derby, you still can’t jump straight into this Quest. You must wait one real-time day. The following day, you can start “Taiyaki Trials” by talking to Badtz-Maru. He’ll be either at the Seaside Resort Dock or somewhere in City Town.
Quest Checklist: Catch the Three Fish
“Taiyaki Trials” is essentially a fishing run. Badtz-Maru wants you to bring him three different catches in this order:
- Catch Fish in City Town
- Catch a Twilight Eye
- Catch a Coral Scouter
- Catch a Shadow Spray
- Catch a Twilight Eye
- Catch a Coral Scouter
- Catch a Shadow Spray
Catch Twilight Eye, Coral Scouter, and Shadow Spray
Once you begin, Badtz-Maru explains that his Fish Almanacs have given him plenty of intel about City Town’s fish, and he wants you to catch specific varieties. Usahana then suggests City Town. If you aren’t already there, you’ll need to travel to City Town so you can speak with Badtz-Maru.
Catch a Twilight Eye
The first target is the Twilight Eye. You can land this fish by fishing on the far western end of City Town’s beach during Night.
Before you go fishing, Badtz-Maru wants you to craft bait. He requests:
- Veggie Mochi to use as bait
- Sweet Mochi for him
Head to the Imagination Cafe and use the Chef’s Station to make the items below.
Veggie Mochi recipe:
- 1 x Rice Flour — produced at the Chef’s Station using Rice; 1 Rice can make 5 Rice Flour
- 1 x Spinip — found near the water’s edge in the Spooky Swamp
Sweet Mochi recipe:
- 1 x Rice Flour — produced at the Chef’s Station using Rice; 1 Rice can make 5 Rice Flour
- 1 x Candy Cloud — a return gift from Cinnamoroll
After that, talk to Badtz-Maru again. He confirms that the Twilight Eye can only be caught at Night. You have multiple ways to reach Night:
- Wait naturally until Night.
- Make it Night by sleeping in a bed in a Visitor Cabin or your House.
- If you have it unlocked, set Pekkle as your Companion and use his Dance All Night ability to change the time.
When Night arrives, go to the east end of the beach and catch one Twilight Eye. The catch size can be Tiny, Normal, or Huge—any of them count.
Catch a Coral Scouter
When you’re done, give the Twilight Eye to Badtz-Maru. Next, he wants a Coral Scouter. He says the ideal bait would be Cheesecake, but the Quest does not require you to make or use Cheesecake.
Coral Scouters can be caught at all times of day, and you can find them in these places:
- Middle of City Town’s western beach, roughly halfway between the docks and the edge of town
- Small islands scattered around the eastern beaches of City Town
- Underneath the bridge that connects the main City Town area to the eastern park and the City Critter Park area
As with the first fish, any size of Coral Scouter—Tiny, Normal, or Huge—counts for the Quest.
Catch a Shadow Spray
After you give the Coral Scouter to Badtz-Maru, he explains the final catch: the Shadow Spray. This fish lives in the Sewers, but Badtz-Maru is too nervous to go down there with you, so he won’t accompany you.
Head to the Main Sewer fast travel mailbox, then go left until you spot the entrance to a blue tunnel beside a ladder. Walk through the blue tunnel and you’ll reach a space with an underground pond. The Shadow Spray can be caught in that pond at all times of day.
Once you catch a Tiny, Normal, or Huge Shadow Spray, return to the main City Town area and give it to Badtz-Maru.
When you hand over the last fish, Usahana appears. She says your fishing progress inspired her to develop a new recipe for Taiyaki, the fish-shaped pastry. Taiyaki is made at the Imagination Cafe’s Chef’s Station using Batter plus one additional ingredient of your choice. At the Chef’s Station, you can make 5 Batter from 1 Flour.
You don’t actually have to craft any Taiyaki to clear the Quest—once Usahana gives you the recipe, the Quest ends automatically. Still, right after completion, Taiyaki becomes available immediately for customers to order at the Imagination Cafe.
Rewards and What Unlocks After Completing the Quest
Completing “Taiyaki Trials” grants the following Rewards:
- Taiyaki Recipe
- Batter Recipe
- Customers can order Taiyaki at the Imagination Cafe
- 3 x Sweet Taiyaki (given by Usahana at the end of the Quest)
