Harry Maguire Left Out as Trent Alexander-Arnold Returns to England Squad

Harry Maguire has again been excluded from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, while Trent Alexander-Arnold has been recalled for the forthcoming Nations League camp after injuries reshaped the options at right-back.

Maguire’s latest omission extends a difficult period in his international career. The 32-year-old centre-back was controversially left out of England’s World Cup group and has not forced his way back in despite the manager naming a fresh squad for Nations League matches.

Branthwaite’s return further reduces the prospect of an immediate Maguire recall. Tuchel was asked about the public response to the World Cup decision, after Maguire criticised the omission before the official squad announcement and his mother said she was “absolutely disgusted” by it.

The England manager made clear that the reaction had not helped Maguire’s case. Tuchel said he would not hold the matter against the defender indefinitely and could move on quickly, but admitted he did not like the comments or the effect they had on the situation.

Alexander-Arnold, by contrast, has been given another opportunity after missing the summer tournament. The Real Madrid defender has benefited from absences in the position, with Arsenal’s Ben White and Chelsea captain Reece James both unavailable through injury.

Tuchel has nevertheless placed a clear condition on Alexander-Arnold’s return: a rapid improvement in his defensive work. The manager said the player must meet that demand, while stressing his belief in Alexander-Arnold’s talent and determination to represent England again.

Alexander-Arnold had made no secret of his wish to return to the international set-up. Tuchel said the defender now has a lengthy camp in which to demonstrate that commitment and compete for his place. The England boss added that he had not spoken with him before this call-up; their previous conversation came before the World Cup, when Tuchel informed him that he would not be selected.

England enter the Nations League programme following a painful World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina. The aftermath of that defeat was strained, with Tuchel questioning aspects of the side’s footballing identity and criticising the team’s failure to carry out instructions after defensive changes did not produce the intended result.

Despite that fallout, Tuchel believes the group remain fully invested in his work. He pointed to the seven weeks spent with the players during the campaign and his 18 months in charge, arguing that England are not beginning again from scratch but can build from an established base.

For Tuchel, the next cycle is aimed at delivering a major trophy at the home European Championship in 2028. Alexander-Arnold has an opening to strengthen his standing during the latest camp, while Maguire faces a far steeper task if he is to regain the manager’s confidence.
