Harry Kane Stars but Bayern Munich Held by Arsenal in 2-2 Draw
Bayern Munich and Arsenal shared four goals in an intense 2-2 draw, with Harry Kane scoring and assisting for the German side before Declan Rice struck late to deny Vincent Kompany’s team victory. Bayern produced the stronger underlying attacking numbers, recording 2.51 expected goals to Arsenal’s 1.40, but could not convert their control into a decisive third goal.
Arsenal strike first before Bayern respond
Arsenal took the lead in the 25th minute through Eberechi Eze, who had come into the side after Bukayo Saka’s injury. Martin Ødegaard threaded the decisive pass into the area and Eze finished from close range.
Bayern found a route back into the contest through Kane’s link play. The England captain released Alphonso Davies with a precise pass, and the advanced left-sided player finished calmly in the 35th minute to level the match before half-time.
- Manuel Neuer faced five efforts on target and made three saves.
- The Bayern goalkeeper had little chance against Eze’s close-range opener.
- Neuer later pushed a Jurriën Timber attempt over the crossbar and continued to play an important role in Bayern’s build-up.
- Dayot Upamecano led the match with 14 defensive actions, winning three tackles and eight duels.
- Upamecano also came close to scoring shortly after the restart, but David Raya made an excellent save from his 49th-minute header.
Kane puts Bayern ahead, but Rice has final say
Bayern increased their pressure after the interval and went in front on 61 minutes. Timber was penalised for handball, allowing Kane to take responsibility from the spot and convert the penalty.
Kane was central to Bayern’s best work throughout, producing four shots and posting 1.11 expected goals in addition to creating Davies’ equaliser. Davies, deployed unusually high on the left, was a persistent outlet and generated 0.56 xG from open play before leaving the field in the 85th minute.
Konrad Laimer almost added another Bayern goal six minutes after Kane’s penalty. Breaking forward quickly, the right-back saw his shot blocked. His energy gave Bayern an option in transition, although Arsenal’s overlapping full-backs caused him problems later in the match.
Arsenal eventually punished Bayern’s failure to put the game beyond reach. As the home side dropped deeper, Rice arrived late to drive in the second equaliser. Neuer was beaten by the strike, with Bayern’s defensive cover around the edge of the area failing to prevent the midfielder’s run.
Selection calls and key individual performances
Kompany’s plan to push Davies high up the left flank created space behind Arsenal’s defensive line and helped Bayern turn the first half around. However, the decision—or necessity—to defend deeper after taking the lead allowed Arsenal to build sustained late pressure.
Kim Min-Jae endured a difficult opening 45 minutes in central defence. He struggled with Arsenal’s quick rotations and did not hold the line effectively in the move that produced Eze’s goal, prompting his replacement by Jonathan Tah at half-time. Tah brought greater composure and managed the aerial challenge posed by Viktor Gyökeres after the forward was introduced.
- Josip Stanišić started on the left of the defence, largely staying back to provide balance for Davies’ attacking role. He was positionally dependable but found Noni Madueke’s late bursts difficult to contain.
- Aleksandar Pavlović completed 61 of his 65 pass attempts, setting Bayern’s leading distribution figure. He repeatedly played through Arsenal’s press, though Rice disrupted him more effectively during the final 20 minutes.
- The other young Bayern midfielder retained possession efficiently but could not consistently provide the final-third incision needed against Arsenal’s compact defensive shape. He also found the physical contest with Bruno Guimarães demanding.
- Ismael Saibari worked between the lines but missed a 33rd-minute long-range effort and had another attempt saved in the 52nd minute. He made way for Luis Díaz in the 68th minute.
- Serge Gnabry had efforts blocked in the 21st and 45th minutes and offered defensive support to Laimer, but could not regularly get past Riccardo Calafiori. He was substituted in the 68th minute.
Substitutes unable to find a winner
Díaz added direct running after entering for Saibari and had a shot blocked in the 76th minute, but he was unable to find the late breakthrough Bayern needed. He was replaced in stoppage time by a tactical change.
The substitute introduced for Gnabry brought energy but had limited influence in attack as Arsenal took more possession in the closing stages. Bayern also made an 85th-minute left-flank change for Davies, primarily to reinforce their defensive shape, but the visitors still found the equaliser through Rice.
