Gyokeres Extends Nations League Scoring Run in Sweden Win Over Romania
Viktor Gyokeres struck early as Sweden defeated Romania 1-0 in Bucharest, taking his Nations League scoring sequence to seven matches and putting his country in a commanding position at the top of its group.
The Arsenal forward scored in the 13th minute, arriving first after Sebastian Nanasi’s attempt came back off the woodwork. It proved the only goal of a match Sweden did not entirely control after the interval, but the visitors held firm for a valuable clean sheet.
Quick facts
- Sweden won 1-0 away to Romania in Bucharest.
- Gyokeres scored the winner in the 13th minute.
- He has now scored in seven successive Nations League appearances.
- The 26-year-old has reached 25 goals for Sweden, moving beyond Marcus Berg.
- Sweden lead Bosnia by two points ahead of the November fixtures.
Gyokeres had previously shared the Nations League mark of five consecutive scoring appearances with Aleksandar Mitrovic and Benjamin Sesko. His latest goal moved him clear and set a new standard in the competition.
The strike also carried significance in Sweden’s all-time scoring list. Gyokeres is now on 25 international goals after overtaking Berg, adding another landmark to a prolific spell that has continued following his high-profile Premier League move.
While pleased with his finishing, Gyokeres felt Sweden had missed the chance to make the contest safer before half-time. He said the side created good opportunities but should have put the game beyond Romania earlier.
Sweden allowed the home side more possession and territory after the break, with Gyokeres acknowledging that the press was not effective enough. That made the closing stages more difficult than necessary, although the defensive work ensured the narrow lead survived.
The forward nevertheless saw value in a victory achieved without everything going to plan. He stressed that the clean sheet was an important outcome after a period without one, while adding that Sweden must improve their control of matches.
The result gives Sweden a two-point cushion over Bosnia at the summit of the group. Gyokeres said the squad knew the importance of taking all three points before the November international window and will return to the competition in a positive position.
