Gray Zone Warfare Update 0.5 to Push Players Toward Zero Zone Endgame
Madfinger Games is preparing a major step forward for its realistic open-world tactical shooter Gray Zone Warfare. The studio has announced that the upcoming 0.5 update won’t be another small polish pass—it’s designed to gradually bring players closer to the game’s “endgame,” centered on reaching the Zero Zone. The change also signals a new milestone in the game’s status, with the update planned to move Gray Zone Warfare from pre-alpha into alpha later this year.
Details for the update were shared more concretely during gamescom 2026. According to the latest information, the 0.5 release is targeted for fall, when the project’s development stage will officially shift from pre-alfa to alfa. Beyond that structural upgrade, the content focus is clear: the team is adding a new player hideout, expanding gameplay space with fresh locations, and reworking key progression and matchmaking rules around PvE and PvPvE.
A hideout, a new crafting layer, and three fresh areas
The headline feature in version 0.5 is the introduction of a player hideout. It’s intended to serve as more than a safe place—players will be able to store items there and use the hideout as a base for building modules and producing supplies. Most importantly, the update is bringing crafting to Gray Zone Warfare. However, it won’t function as a survival-first crafting system in the style of some other tactical shooters. Instead, crafting is described as being woven into the story layer: production will take place in a chemical lab located inside the hideout, and what you make will tie into completing quests and tasks.
The lab’s crafting requests will include examples tied to named NPC questgivers. “Lab Rat” will ask players to craft morphine. “Vulture” will assign the creation of drugs that are then delivered to different locations across the map. Meanwhile, “Artisan” will request that players use the lab to recover valuable military technology.
Alongside the hideout and crafting system, the 0.5 update will also add three new locations. One of them is “Radar,” described as a large installation where players can find bunkers packed with valuable loot. Another is “Asylum,” positioned as a dark setting with winding corridors that conceal secrets connected to Lemang’s grim past. The third new area is a military camp—set near the boundary of the Zero Zone—aimed at functioning as a well-equipped base.
More playable characters, clearer PvE/PvPvE separation
Version 0.5 also expands player choice in terms of roles. Instead of being limited to three fixed characters so far, players will be able to select a representative from any faction, with the update listing 10 factions as the available options. In addition, the game’s mode structure is being adjusted: PvE and PvPvE will be split into separate experiences.
That separation has a direct gameplay consequence. Equipment obtained in the “easier” PvE environment will no longer be transferable into the PvP-focused world. In other words, farming gear under PvE will not allow players to carry that loot into PvPvE scenarios.
Madfinger Games also framed 0.5 as only the beginning of the broader changes aimed at preparing players for the eventual endgame loop built around reaching the Zero Zone. More information about the alpha version may be revealed during the FPS Games Show, where the studio is scheduled to appear. The show is set for September 3 at 8:00 PM Polish time.
