Final Fantasy 6 Gets a 3-Year Tactics-Style Makeover From Dedicated Modder

Final Fantasy 6 and Final Fantasy Tactics are often singled out as two of the strongest entries in the series, but only one of them has seen a modern remake so far. Until Square Enix decides otherwise, modders are stepping in—one creator has been rebuilding FF6 with a Tactics-style makeover for years.

Final Fantasy 6 Remade as a Tactics-Style Mod

A modder known as Conman began work on a Final Fantasy 6 remake concept in the style of Final Fantasy Tactics more than three years ago, and the project has been progressing steadily since. Multiple showcase videos have been posted to Conman’s YouTube channel, giving viewers a look at how the mod is constructed. The key detail: it’s being built with the original FF Tactics structure in mind, not the later remake approach.

That said, the mod isn’t aiming for a full, scene-by-scene retelling of the original FF6 story with every system and mechanic rebuilt. Conman is instead reworking the game’s combat into what they call a “battle rush style” of remake. Translation: if you want to avoid spoilers or confusion, you’ll likely want to already know FF6’s plot before jumping in.

The creator’s focus is on making the battles feel right in a Tactics-like framework, even if the overall experience won’t mirror a traditional remake release.

Character rosters are also being adapted with care. Each of FF6’s playable cast is being recreated and given strengths and abilities that reflect how they function in the original game. Terra, Edgar, Celes, Sabin, Shadow, Cyan, Strago, and Locke are listed as main characters. Meanwhile, Mog, Umaro, and Banon are planned as guest characters.

Terra and Celes are being leaned toward magic-focused capabilities, while Locke is being equipped with skill options built around stealing from enemies. Edgar’s offensive moves are set up so that his attacks correspond to different weapons.

Progress Update, Added Fights, and What Modders Still Might Change

As of now, the mod isn’t finished—Conman is still adjusting content and weighing whether to introduce additional battles and abilities. Still, a recent update has been released, and it adds multiple encounters. One of the most notable inclusions is a fight tied to Kefka during the World of Ruin segment.

The mod is hosted on the Final Fantasy Hacktics website, where a credits list is also available to highlight everyone involved in the project.

I haven’t personally tested it yet, but it’s the kind of build that makes you want to see how it handles fan-favorite set pieces. In particular, it would be great to watch how Conman translates iconic battles like the train sequence, as well as the many encounters involving Ultros. An official Final Fantasy 6 Remake may still be far off, but this effort is a solid way to experience FF6 in a different style while waiting.
