Echoes of Aincrad’s “Log Out” Button Traps You—Here’s What’s Going On

In Echoes of Aincrad, the “Log Out” entry in the pause menu doesn’t behave like a normal exit option. Instead, selecting it triggers an in-game pop-up that reads “Now is not the time to log out,” and the game immediately boots you back to the pause screen. For players trying to leave the title the straightforward way, it can feel like there’s no way out—because the obvious button doesn’t appear to do anything at all.

That behavior is intentional, and it mirrors a recurring design idea across Sword Art Online games: recreating the anime’s “Death Game” premise where the VMMORPG became inescapable after Kayaba Akihiko turned the world into a trap. Still, it doesn’t mean quitting is impossible. You can fully exit Echoes of Aincrad; the option is simply tucked away inside the menus.

Echoes of Aincrad also relies on auto-saving, so the game can preserve your progress as you leave. Here’s what’s going on and how to get out properly.

To quit in Echoes of Aincrad, start from the pause menu, then move to Settings. From there, head to the final tab on the top row—marked with the upward arrow icon. In that area, you’ll find two exit-related choices:

  • Return to Title Screen: Sends you back to the main menu. From there, you can manage save files, tweak certain settings, or quit the game.
  • Quit Game: Closes the game completely—on PC it returns you to the desktop, while on consoles it takes you back to the main menu.

Choosing either option also triggers an automatic auto-save, preserving your current progress.

What is “Now is Not the Time to Log Out” in Echoes of Aincrad?

When you open the pause menu in Echoes of Aincrad, one of the listed entries is “Log Out.” If you select it, the game responds with the message “Now is not the time to log out” as an error prompt, and then you’re returned to the pause menu.

This is the same anime reference as the Death Game setup. In Echoes of Aincrad, however, the “Log Out” option is purely cosmetic. It’s there to reinforce the atmosphere and help players stay immersed in the world of SAO. Pressing it doesn’t actually log you out or change your session—it only shows the error message anywhere in the game.

As an extra nod to the Death Game concept, Echoes of Aincrad includes a Death Game mode. This is essentially a permadeath-style setup that uses only one save file: if the entire party dies at any point during the game, the save data gets deleted.

Death Game mode is available from the beginning for players who bought the Deluxe, Ultimate, or Aincrad Editions. Players who selected the Standard Edition don’t get it immediately—they must complete the main story first before unlocking access.
