How to Farm in Dreamlight Valley
Let’s start with the basics. To farm, you dig up a patch of ground, place a Seed into the tilled soil, and then use your Watering Can to keep it moving. After that, you just wait for the crop to finish growing. To carry out the full loop, you’ll need four items.
- A Shovel
- A Watering Can
- A Seed (any type)
- A clear patch of ground with no obstruction
Good news: you’ll pick up the Shovel and Watering Can during the early opening missions, since they’re required to progress. As for empty soil, clear ground is plentiful even near the start of the game, so you won’t be struggling to find space. That leaves only the Seeds themselves.
Where to Buy All Seeds
So how do you get Seeds? You’ve got a few paths. Early on, you may receive Seeds as Quest rewards, and you can also collect certain Seed types by removing Night Thorns in different areas—each location can provide different outcomes.
Your most dependable method is trading with Goofy at his Stalls. Each biome or area in the valley has a stall you can open for a small fee, and every stall carries its own inventory set, including Seeds that match that biome. The rarer the Seed, the higher the price, but it’s still one of the best ways to secure ingredients you need for meals or to finish specific quest goals.
Once you’ve got the Seed: dig a hole, plant it, water it when it starts wilting to keep the growth going, and then collect what you earned after the wait.

Farming With Friends
Sowing and harvesting can take a while, and while the harvest itself is rewarding, you can make the time investment pay off even more by bringing along a friend. It’s not just faster—it’s also better for your Friendship Level.
Most NPC characters you invite to the game (with exceptions like Ariel and Ursula) can be assigned roles that boost your Friendship Level when they participate in that activity. Farming-relevant roles include Digging and Harvesting. Even if your friend is assigned a different task that isn’t directly tied to farming, doing any activity together still increases Friendship Level.
To get someone to join you, talk to them and choose the “Let’s Hang Out!” option.
