D&D Leak Confirms Deadfall’s Level 20 Boss: Red Wizard Szass Tam
Wizards of the Coast has kept quiet about most specifics for its upcoming official Dungeons & Dragons campaign, Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall. However, a Beadle & Grimm email promotion has accidentally surfaced extra information about the module, with the details making their way online.
Szass Tam Confirmed as the Big Bad
The leaked promotion points to an encounter with Szass Tam, described as the most formidable Red Wizard to have ruled Thay—and an enemy that’s already familiar to many players. If you’ve watched for him in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, you may recognize him there as the regent of Thay, where his actions can turn people into undead.
Designed for Level 20 Play (Uncommon for Official Campaigns)
One of the most notable revelations is the campaign’s intended ceiling: the party can fight at Level 20. That’s exceptionally rare for official D&D campaign releases. In practice, much of Wizards of the Coast’s published content either serves as entry point material or is structured in a way that doesn’t push characters much past Level 12.
Balancing encounters at higher tiers is notoriously hard. At those levels, player characters can pull off dramatic, game-warping feats—so designers frequently need to “bend” encounter logic so the opposition can still pose a meaningful challenge. Baldur’s Gate 3 reflects the same design pressure by stopping at Level 12, and Wizards has generally avoided running campaigns at very high levels because the balance problems tend to be unavoidable.
The last official campaign to explicitly reach Level 20 was Vecna: Eve of Ruin (2024). That book drew criticism for certain balance concerns, but it also earned praise for how it handled high-level characters.
The email’s wording frames Deadfall around a high-stakes arc, stating:
- Characters will be tasked with a chain of dangerous, covert missions aimed at undermining and ultimately defeating archlich Szass Tam.
- By the adventure’s conclusion, player characters will reach Level 20.
- Defeating the archlich will require using essentially everything at their disposal—power, resources, and all.
Release Context, Pricing, and What It Might Mean
Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall is set to arrive after the release of an Arcana Unleashed sourcebook in September. That earlier book is expected to provide the groundwork for the campaign’s setting—along with guidance on what kinds of characters are likely to shine in that environment.
Pricing is also part of the leaked details: Deadfall costs $29.99. That price point is lower than what many players associate with standard D&D campaign releases, which could suggest one of two things. Either the adventure is relatively short, or it may be lighter on built-in detail—meaning the dungeon master could have to supply more of the world-building and setting texture themselves.
Wizards has not confirmed any of this directly yet, so nothing can be treated as guaranteed until the publisher shares official information. Still, the idea of taking on the most notorious Red Wizard in Thay is enough to generate serious interest—especially with a promise of true endgame power.
