Dave Bautista Replaces Ryan Hurst as Kratos in Amazon’s God of War Series

Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming God of War television series has found its new Kratos: Dave Bautista will step in to replace Ryan Hurst after the actor suffered a serious injury during production. The change comes as filming is expected to restart soon, with scenes already shot using Hurst needing to be reworked.

Hurst’s exit was forced by a biceps injury sustained on set. The required surgery was expected to delay his return, pushing the production restart to 2027. With that timeline in doubt, the project moved to recast Kratos, turning to Bautista to bring the Spartan ghost to life on screen.

Bautista will play Kratos as a veteran performer with decades of physical training behind him. Before his film career took off, he spent around 20 years as a professional wrestling star. Since 2012, he has built a wide screen resume, including playing Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and Glossu Rabban in the Dune films.

Why Bautista, and what changes for the shoot

His on-screen credits also include 007 Spectre and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Beyond his fitness and acting experience, he has Greek heritage through his mother. For the production itself, the immediate challenge is continuity: the next phase will require reshooting every scene filmed with Hurst before the injury sidelined him.

The series is drawing from the events of the 2018 game. In that story, Kratos and Atreus set out on a journey to scatter the ashes of Faye—Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother—after later revelations make it clear she was never at rest.

Confirmed cast so far

While the Kratos recast is the headline shift, other roles remain in place. Callum Vinson is still attached to portray Atreus. The confirmed supporting cast includes Max Parker as Heimdall and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor.

Mandy Patinkin will play Odin, with Alastair Duncan cast as Mimir. Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka are set to portray the brothers Brok and Sindri, respectively. Ed Skrein is confirmed as Baldur, a key figure in the 2018 storyline that continues to loom over the adaptation’s direction.
