Danganronpa 2×2 Pushes Back to Early 2027 After Studio Schedule Update

Spike Chunsoft has pushed Danganronpa 2×2 back, with the sequel slated to arrive in early 2027 instead of landing in the studio’s previously discussed 2026 window.

The remaster team behind Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair confirmed the change after producer Shohei Sakakibara shared an update. Spike Chunsoft didn’t spell out the exact reason for the delay, but it did try to soften the impact by outlining a new story-related feature for Danganronpa 2×2 called Slayhem Mode.

“While development has been progressing toward a 2026 release, we have decided to move the launch to early 2027,” Sakakibara said. “We will share a more specific release date at a later time.

“We are continuing to work to bring you the best possible experience. We sincerely appreciate your patience as development continues, and we look forward to sharing further updates with you soon.”

What’s changing: Slayhem Mode and the new content plan

Alongside the postponement, players were given details on what to expect from Slayhem Mode. The mode is positioned as a refreshed take on the original 2012 experience, but with a major twist: it’s said to deliver a “completely different storyline.”

At this stage, the known details describe Slayhem Mode as a new sequence of events featuring a different set of victims, culprits, and “tricks.” Spike Chunsoft also says it contains roughly 20% more content than the game’s Original mode.

Importantly, both story options—Slayhem Mode and Original—will be available from the start of the game.

Spike Chunsoft also used the delay announcement to confirm some presentation changes. Rather than a side-scrolling setup, Danganronpa 2×2 will include a 3D world map. The studio also says character portraits have been updated, and it referenced in-development screenshots as part of the update.

When Danganronpa 2×2 was revealed during a Nintendo Direct later last year, fans of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair were told they’d get another chance to revisit Monokuma’s story and the world of Hope’s Peak Academy. Even with the new timing, the project is still expected to miss the kind of release window some players might have hoped for—though it remains planned to launch for PC, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X | S.
