Chelsea face a three-week pause to address growing problems after Friday night’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford, with manager Alonso under increased scrutiny and Brazilian forward Estevao still waiting for a meaningful first-team opportunity.

The result in west London extended Chelsea’s alarming defensive start to the Premier League season. The Blues have now allowed two or more goals in each of their five league matches, while their attack failed to score for the first time after an encouraging opening spell to the campaign.

Joao Pedro’s absence was felt at Brentford. The striker missed the match with a knee problem, and Chelsea struggled to replace his presence at the top of the attack. His injury also brought renewed attention to the balance of Alonso’s side, particularly with several attacking players competing for limited roles.
Former Chelsea midfielder Redknapp has urged the manager to consider a larger role for Estevao, questioning whether the teenager is being left out despite his ability.
“When I watch Estevao, I wonder whether a player of that quality can be kept out of this side,” Redknapp said. “He is an exceptional prospect, but Alonso has to work out how he fits alongside Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro. Those are the decisions he has to make.”
Estevao’s route remains blocked
Estevao has appeared only briefly in the league, with all four outings coming from the bench. His 23 minutes of competitive football underline how difficult it has been for him to break into Alonso’s preferred side.
Alonso’s use of a back three has narrowed the openings for conventional wingers. Pedro Neto has been deployed at right wing-back, while Pep Chavarria and Jorrel Hato have shared responsibilities on the left.
Further forward, Palmer and Rogers have started every game behind the centre-forward, establishing themselves as the manager’s regular choices in the attacking midfield positions. That has left Estevao on the periphery despite his reputation as one of Brazil’s leading young attackers.
January question and Bournemouth return
Estevao is understood to be increasingly concerned by his restricted involvement and could reassess his longer-term position during the January transfer window if his situation does not improve.
Chelsea’s next Premier League fixture is against Bournemouth after the international break. Alonso will have time to examine both the side’s defensive record and the attacking options available to him, including whether Estevao can be brought into a more prominent role.
