Atletico Madrid Beat Manchester United 2-0 to Extend Winless Run
Manchester United’s winless sequence reached five matches after a 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Spanish capital, where an early Pablo Barios strike and Ademola Lookman’s second-half finish settled the contest.
Why the result matters
The loss increases the pressure on Michael Carrick before United’s domestic visit to Leeds this weekend, with tension already building around Old Trafford following Lisandro Martinez’s criticism of the club hierarchy after the match.
| Match detail | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Final score | Atletico Madrid 2-0 Manchester United |
| Opening goal | Pablo Barios, inside 50 seconds |
| United dismissal | Leny Yoro, straight red card |
| Atletico winning run | Five consecutive victories since the Liverpool loss |
| Champions League position | United remain above Atletico on goal difference |
Atletico made the decisive start when Alex Baena ran onto a ball played over the United defence and supplied Barios for the opener. Carrick’s team struggled to establish control, although they were spared a further setback before half-time when Johnny Cardoso’s goal was ruled out for handball.
The visitors’ prospects worsened midway through the second half. Yoro was sent off for bringing down Jonathan David, and Lookman scored from the rebound five minutes later to put Atletico two goals clear.
Diego Simeone said his side had identified an opportunity to play through United’s high press and exploit the wide areas. He felt the early goal helped Atletico take command, adding that his team created enough openings to have won by a wider margin.
The Atletico manager said United had only one notable first-half opportunity, while his own side continued to push for further goals throughout the evening.
Cardoso praised as Alvarez receives hostile reaction
There was one uncomfortable moment for Atletico despite the victory, as Julian Alvarez was jeered when he was replaced in the 71st minute. The forward had wanted a move to Barcelona during the summer, but Atletico prevented the transfer.
Simeone defended Alvarez, saying supporters judge players by their contribution and insisting the striker is moving nearer to the level required. He noted that Alvarez had an opportunity to score against United and stressed that Atletico need him.
Cardoso also received strong praise from his manager after another encouraging display. The American midfielder has impressed since returning from ankle surgery in the summer, having begun to show his level after appearing against Real Sociedad.
Simeone said Cardoso is in a strong period and is now delivering the standard Atletico expected when they signed him.
Next Champions League fixtures
United’s 4-0 victory over Sabah in their opening Champions League match means they still sit above Atletico on goal difference despite this defeat. Carrick’s side will travel to Como, managed by Cesc Fabregas, next week, while Atletico head to Germany to face Stuttgart.
