Carragher Questions Carrick’s Long-Term Manchester United Credentials
Michael Carrick faces an early defining weekend as Manchester United prepare to host Manchester City at Old Trafford, with Jamie Carragher questioning whether the former United midfielder can ultimately deliver the game’s biggest prizes as permanent manager.

Carragher believes the appointment is justified by Carrick’s recent results, but he does not expect United to win either the league title or Champions League under the current head coach. He said Carrick’s record has been “fantastic” while arguing that major trophy-winning managers tend to possess an additional level of presence and star quality.
The former Liverpool defender suggested Carrick still has to show that he carries that decisive quality. He also argued that Carrick’s coaching background alone would not have made him a leading candidate for a comparable elite job elsewhere in England or Europe.
In Carragher’s view, Carrick may continue to be regarded as a temporary answer despite receiving the permanent contract. He said there is a perception that United could be holding the position for a more established managerial figure to arrive in the summer of 2027.
United have backed their manager in the transfer market, committing £140 million to add Tielemans, Baleba and Santos. That investment has not yet produced consistency: the campaign began with the Hull setback before a win and a draw left Carrick’s team with a mixed early record.
The 4-0 Champions League victory over Sabah provided a timely lift before the derby, but City will present a markedly tougher test. A strong performance against their local rivals would give Carrick and his players an immediate chance to answer doubts over whether this United side can challenge the Premier League’s leading clubs.
