Call of Duty Black Ops Re-Releases Surge Past GTA 6 on PlayStation Charts

Two classic entries in the Call of Duty lineup have unexpectedly surged past Grand Theft Auto 6 on the PlayStation Store charts. Activision has announced plans to bring back Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 with re-releases targeted at PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Even though some players have questioned the pricing for ports of games that are more than a decade old, the numbers suggest the demand is very much alive.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is often credited with helping Treyarch sharpen its identity within the CoD brand. The title earned praise for its winding, twist-filled campaign and for refreshing the familiar Call of Duty multiplayer structure. Its Zombies mode also drew strong approval. Black Ops 2 received similar admiration, and together these two games remain among the most fondly remembered chapters in the franchise.

Some modes in Black Ops—including Five and Dead Ops Arcade—are not immediately visible unless you know the right unlock steps, and this guide-style segment explains exactly what you need to do.

Black Ops 1 and 2 Are Ahead of GTA 6 on the PlayStation Store

Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are currently leading the PlayStation Store rankings, even managing to edge out Grand Theft Auto 6 at the top. GTA 6 is arguably the most anticipated new game release around, and it’s understandable that it would dominate sales charts when pre-orders first opened. Still, the fact that these Call of Duty titles are already playable gives them a clear advantage in the short term.

It’s very likely that GTA 6 will reclaim the lead soon after. Once Rockstar decides to drop the long-awaited “Trailer 3,” it could trigger another rush of pre-orders and help the game return to the top of the sales charts. When Grand Theft Auto 6 finally launches later this year, it should almost immediately become the best-selling title of the year, meaning the CoD ports may not hold their position indefinitely.

With the success of the Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 re-releases, it naturally raises the question of whether Activision will extend the ports to other systems. Right now, the releases are limited to PS4 and PS5. There’s no Xbox version available—even though Xbox owns Activision and therefore has the Call of Duty IP under its umbrella—and there’s also no Switch 2 release. One possible explanation is that the original versions can be played on Xbox via backward compatibility, reducing the pressure to build native ports. However, the lack of a Switch 2 option still feels like a missed opening, especially since many fans would likely welcome a performance and population boost for multiplayer servers. Hopefully, native Black Ops and Black Ops 2 ports for additional platforms are announced sooner rather than later.

These CoD: Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 re-releases also don’t include Wager Matches, and they don’t come with any major improvements or overhaul-level upgrades. That said, the situation still highlights that there’s value in moving older Call of Duty games to newer hardware without the full remastering effort. Whether more older Call of Duty titles receive similar port treatment is still unclear.
